Review summary

Will definitely book another Viking Ocean Cruise. In fact we did... while on board, we booked one of their cruises to Alaska. An outstanding experience from ship amenities to food to excursions to staff services!!!

Embarkation

When we arrived at the Viking Star, it was 3:30 pm. There were no lines. We were registered at the Viking desk on the dock at Piraes, and were on the ship within 10 minutes. We went directly to our room, our steward was at the door to greet us, and our luggage was already in the room. Pretty amazing experience!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
We had 6 reservations at their signature restaurants, Chef’s Table and Manfredi’s. They were both excellent, but we preferred Manfredi’s for its menu selection. The Chef’s Table is a fixed menu that repeats for three days. I’d recommend checking the menu before you go there, in case they are serving foods you don't care for. We did like everything they served. Our biggest surprise was how great The Restaurant and The World Cafe buffet was! Excellent choices, great service... even at the buffet. No waits. The food selection on board was excellent.

Onboard Activities

Loved the spa pool, and it was never crowded. Most people went to the main pool on deck 7. They had four lecturers on board, but we found the topics to be nothing of interest to us... felt like a college lecture series rather than an entertainment. Lots of great music. The nightclub was small but nice for dancing and/or drinks. The lounges were scattered throughout the ship and there was always quiet seating available. Lots of good choices on the in room movies as well.

The nightclub was small but nice for dancing and/or drinks. The lounges were scattered throughout the ship and there was always quiet seating available. The musical entertainment was excellent! Lots of good choices on the in room movies as well. After long excursion days and dinner, it was hard to find the energy for much more.

Service and Staff

Indescribable!. Excellent everywhere by everyone. We were addressed by name in all the formal restaurants by hosts and servers alike. Attentive. Lots of followup. Bartenders remembered our orders. Our room steward was OUTSTANDING, bringing extra hangers aand cleaning our room promptly. Room servce attendants brought us breakfast every morning and always had the order perfect.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Lots of places to sit. Lots of lounges for drinks, Elevators were plentiful and made it easy to get around. Directions to disembark were very easy to follow. Ship was immaculate and furniture was comfortable.

Cabin / Stateroom

Very spacious. The bed was very comfortable. Seating plentiful. Loved all the room in the bathroom. The shower was easy to use, lots of room. We had double sinks. The only thing we would have improved was the couch, which was a little on the soft side and took an effort to get up from. But there were also 2 chairs that were very comfortable and our preferred places to sit. Lots of drawer space, closet space, a room safe for all our valuables. Lots of places to plug in, with American and European outlets. A very nice balcony with two seats and a table. Even though it was November, we enjoyed sitting outside as we approached some of the ports. Our steward was friendly, attentive, and cleaned our room early every day, which was our preference.

Ship tip

Sign up for your chosen excursions as soon as you are able. The excursions were wonderful, and there were lots of options, but to get your chosen time slot, early is best. Also, so many passengers book a second ocean trip while on board that is important to sign up with their booking agent early, or you may not get time to book onboard and garner all the special discounts and benefits available with an onboard booking.
