Review summary
It was very beautiful up there. I spent a lot of time on my balcony and other ship locations with my camera and binoculars just watching the scenery pass by.
I met Patrick and Lori through the ShipMate roll call and spent time with them.
The excursions were great. The ship and staff were great. Everything was top notch on this cruise.

This is the forth Grand Class ship I’ve been on. Great ships, I’ll be disappointed when they’re gone. But that won’t be for a while yet. Zero complaints about the Star Princess.
Cabin / Stateroom

Great location. I was just two doors aft from the forward stairs, close to the stairs but far enough back so I didn’t hear any traffic from the stairs/elevator area. The 10th floor is a good mid-position deck.
Ship tip
Get off the ship at each port. There’s something for everyone.
Plenty to do here before and after the cruise. If you have a choice between visiting the Space Needle or the Smith Tower, I say go to the Smith Tower. I’ve been to both and liked the Smith Tower better. It’s over 100 years old, it’s small, but I think it’s the better venue. Lots of other great places too.
Did a water tour that’s a half hour away from Ketchikan followed by a seafood feed at a remote lodge. Awesome, awesome, awesome! There are lots of excursions to choose from but I’ll most likely choose this one again next time I go on an Alaska Cruise.
Beautiful! We stopped at a spot where smaller boats took people off to get closer to the glacier. The view from the ship is great but I wish I had done the boat excursion. The transit through this Fjord is amazing to watch. I started watching at 4:30am but the ship had started in a bit earlier. Plenty of day light at that time in June. It was well worth getting up early to watch it. Also the ship board commentator talked that whole time during the transit. He gave lots of good info.
I did the excursion that had a brief city tour, trip up the Tram, and a short hike up at the top where the Tram takes you. I enjoyed the excursion but this is what I’ll do next time, this is also a tip.
The Tram is right in middle of the main three cruise ship docks, very close to the ships. Next time I’ll do another excursion and go up the Tram on my own, before or after an excursion, and hike around one of the loops at the top. There was no need to buy the excursion, you won’t be in danger of missing ship departure. The city tour was super short, not really needed. And the loop up at the top that we hiked can be done on your own. It’s short, just stay on the trail, and mind the signs. Or you can just skip hiking and enjoy visiting the buildings up at the top. Or do both.
We were on this cruise as well. This review is spot on! It was a great cruise with great ports of call, and the ship and staff were amazing! We would go again on the Star Princess in a heartbeat!
Thanks for advice we are sailing out of San Francisco July 2, 2020 and looking forward to it. Is a passport all you need for BC ( no shots needed) some countries require medical cert when traveling by sea
