I was repeatedly given food I'm allergic too and food that's unsafe for me as I'm pregnant. I was humiliated by staff openly discussing it on the restaurant floor, having to eat late and by myself every day and I still ended up ill. I was made promises which were never followed through and it ruined my entire holiday. The ship is dated and has a real lack of areas to go during the day. Restaurants have huge queues and booking ahead makes no difference to this. Food is slow. Staff appear way over stretched and inadequately trained. You couldn't pay me to take another Princess Cruise.
Embarkation
3 out of 5
We opted to be in one of the last groups, so it was quick. They wouldn't allow us to check in with my in-laws, who are deaf, and that created some issues. We didn't understand how luggage drop off worked and there's no one to tell you this.

Food and Dining
1 out of 5
My main issue is around food safety. IF YOU HAVE ANY DIETARY REQUIREMENTS, PRINCESS IS NOT SAFE FOR YOU. Please also note if you're vegan, there are no vegan dishes available.
I am pregnant and allergic to dairy (to be specific, milk products like cream, cheese and butter). I told Princess on the app and on the online portal before I boarded. I told my booking agent when I booked the cruise. The first night, there was no meal for me. Instead I ended up with a dry piece of meat with some vegetables, served after everyone else had eaten. Thereafter I was told to order my food 24hrs in advance, which I always did. Yet every single meal had food that was unsafe for me to eat and each time it was me who noticed the issue. I even had issues in the speciality dining restaurants. When I was served food I couldn't eat, I often got a poor attitude from staff such as "oh it didn't say that on your ticket" as if I was the one who wrote the ticket and they just seemed really annoyed with me. I then had to eat by myself, as my family had all finished eating. Every day this happened.
They did eventually make me a separate dessert, which I had no choice in, but it was the same one five days in a row and again later than everyone else at my table was served. They wouldn't serve everyone else the same food every day, so I don't understand why it was ok for me.
Despite me asking them not to, a chef came out to talk to me about my dietary requirements and pregnancy on the restaurant floor, where other diners could overhear what was being said. He promised to take care of my food and ensure it was safe going forwards, but then admitted he didn't know what pregnant women can and can't eat. I similarly had a waiter argue with me about safe food and later apologised to my husband, rather than to me. He then asked me to teach him what pregnant people can and can't eat. Frankly the lack of training around this is shocking.
I complained to Guest Services on board, who apologised every day. I was told every day the chefs would be told and that it wasn't good enough, and yet nothing ever changed. I was told I'd have a meeting with the Head of Catering, but that didn't happen. I raised my concerns after I left the ship, and was told it would be reviewed and they'd give me 20% of the cruise value back. It's really not good enough. I ended up ill on the cruise because, despite my efforts, I still ended up eating dairy. I dreaded meal times every day and it it ruined the holiday for my family too. I also tried eating in the buffet, but food is either not labelled or labelled incorrectly, and room service kept getting my order wrong.
Princess don't seem to take seriously that if someone has a severe allergic reaction to a food, this could cost them their life. Thankfully for me, it just made me ill.
There was only ever one restaurant open for lunch. Even with reservations, there were often long queues.
Onboard Activities
1 out of 5
There are not a lot of places to go on the ship during the day. We headed to Alaska, so it was often too cool to sit outside. Inside areas during the day were mainly limited to the buffet area and the atrium, which was always packed and difficult to get a seat in.
Entertainment
1 out of 5
I was just really uninspired by the entertainment on offer, so we skipped in most of the time.
Service and Staff
2 out of 5
Staff tried, but they have no support, no training and are overworked. We were given many promises, which never materialised. I think they were on the edge of just about managing, so got frustrated quickly. Food always took a long time, despite reservations and pre-ordering, and even room service took a very long time. The staff were nice, but the service was incredibly poor. See my review above about how they handled food safety - it was honestly shocking.
Ship Quality
3 out of 5
The ship seemed clean, and our cabin was very well kept, but the ship itself looks tired, with very dated decor. There are extremely limited places to go during the day.
Cabin / Stateroom
3 out of 5
The rooms are dated. If you're looking at this cabin, you're probably wondering about the pillar. We found our balcony was larger (deeper) than the average balcony size because of the pillar. Whilst a chair wouldn't fit in front of it, there is space in front of the pillar to stand and the deck chairs will fit either side of it.
Ship tip
Don't. You couldn't pay me to go back on this ship.
Chaotic. My deaf in-laws couldn't hear the announcements, which are only over the speaker system. You can't hear them in your room either, where you're told to wait. They didn't adhere to the times or the disembarkation locations they'd previously told us. Getting a taxi whilst off was near impossible as there's no organisation outside the terminal, just people everywhere.
Regarding your dietary restrictions, next time ask the head waiter for next day menu so you can select and ensure they know of food allergies. Never had a problem - you just need to know how to go about doing this. Good luck
The Ruby Princess had tons of vegan dishes! You sound like a grumbling, grumpy patron. I didn’t even read your full review as it is so very long and all you did was complain throughout. Newsflash! You will never find the perfect cruise line/ship. There will be hiccups in all of them.
Yeah, another questionable review. I've been on Ruby Princess several times and absolutely love this ship. You say there is no places to go on deck, yet they have a covered pool area, plenty of lounges night clubs, so if you can't find a place, you didn't look. There is always some kind of vegetarian meal available and probably with your dietary needs, maybe a cruise isn't for you, since that's all you did is complain.....about everything I might add. I gave up on reading your endless banter on how bad it was, since I could see your level of expectations could probably not be reached by any cruise line.
Princess worked wonderfully with my food allergies. We had a wonderful time on our cruise to Alaska. Hope your experience doesn’t keep you from cruising again. It can be such a wonderful time! Best wishes on your pregnancy.
I have a really hard time believing all the dietary issues you're describing. They literally deal with hundreds of thousands of passengers with all types of dietary restrictions, and they are able to accommodate them all. As far as being pregnant, really the only thing you have to avoid is raw fish, and even then, it's up to you whether you are comfortable eating it. I don't believe the onus is on the crew to make a medical call on what is safe for you or not. If you have such difficulty with foods, perhaps being in an environment where others prepare your food is not right for you.
Unfair to blame the staff for asking you about your diet while pregnant. There are only guidelines on what foods a pregnant person is advised to avoid, they probably vary in different countries, and not everyone chooses to follow them. Up to you to include your own wishes in your dietary requirements. Also I think if I was vegan or had the issues you said you had with food I would give up and live on some of the lovely salads you can usually get, rather than end up hungry or ill!
Join the club. We stopped cruising with them 10 years ago. They are so underfunded as all the Carnival owned cruise lines. Their stock is in horrible condition, so they are pressured to male every penny they can.
