Review summary

This was our first cruise, not exactly what we expected. I thought the customer service would of been much better. But since the waitstaff receives a 18% tip no matter what it felt like they didnt care. As I said previously in my review while eating at the buffet sometimes they wouldn't bring us our beverages. The waiter at the bars we had to chase down to order or go to the bar and place our order. At one bar we had to ask a waiter to wipe off the table. He wilped the crumbs on the table on to my lap. We told him we wanted to order drinks, the waiter smiled and walked away. We went to the bar to get our drinks. Not great service but they didnt care, because as soon as we bought that drink they automatically received 18% tip. So I gave someone a tip for dumping garbage in my lap and walking away when we asked to order drinks.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
Restaurants were great, great service, awesome food. Buffets not so great, poor service and food had no flavor

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5
We didn't participate in any ship activities. we walked the ship looked for whales and other animals

Entertainment

3 out of 5
We watched a musical that was comparable to a high school play. We also watched a comedian that was really good

Service and Staff

1 out of 5
Waiters at the buffets and bars were not good. At the buffets it took a long time for them to bring drinks if they brought them at all. The waiters at the bars we either had to chase down or go to the bar and get our own drinks. At one time we had to ask for a table to be cleaned and the waiter wiped the crumbs on the table in to my lap and just walked away after my said we'd like to order drinks. The room steward was always going through our items on the desk and rearranging them.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Ship design and layout were good, and appeared to be clean and maintained. But I will say the window frame outside my room had paint flaking off and was rusty

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Room was clean the bunkbed above me was a little to close and the shower was to small

Ship tip

Dont expect great customer service from the waitstaff

Juneau, Alaska

Everything really close to where we docked. We went to Mendanhal Glacier and walked the trails

Skagway, Alaska

5 out of 5
We did the train ride, beautiful views. Town was close to the ship and the train dropped us off downtown so we didn't have to walk back downtown

Cruise Glacier Bay

4 out of 5
We liked seeing the glaciers but wasnt what we expected.

Ketchikan, Alaska

3 out of 5
We didn't have enough time in Ketchikan, we did the rainforest excursion but didnt have time for much more

Victoria, British Columbia

3 out of 5
We were about an hour late docking we were suppose to have 4 hours but had 3, we had enough time to walk downtown take a few pictures and walk back to the ship. Gift shops near the ship were to small and very crowded

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
Not much direction, we were told to meet in a club on board, then we were told we could leave, no details on what bus to take for our paid ride to the airport

Buffet is usually self serve, you want to be waited on???????

Service seems to be lacking most places now, but it certainly would take a lot for that to be my primary focus on a cruise, but especially to Alaska.

I was told by staff that they don’t see the gratuitiies in their paystub but is part of their total pay. There is no excuse for the poor customer service and you should have informed his supervisor. Wait staff enployees are normally new employees. They should be concerned because if they are not good employees and they get many complaints, they don’t get a call back after their 6 or 9 month contract is completed. You also need to understand that cruise ships work the employees long hours almost 16 hours a day, 7 days a week. It would be good to talk to staff because most of them come from poor countries. Again, no excuse for the poor customer service.

So did some crumbs get knocked on to your lap when the waiter wiped the table or did he dump garbage on you? Could you be exaggerating?.... I do believe the buffet staff did not always promptly bring you drinks but that seems to be a weak point for a lot of cruise ships. At least you don't tip them. You just learn to get your own drinks in the buffet sometimes.

Very interesting review about the wait staff. Never heard of such a thing. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with them because like you said, you did tip them.
