Review summary

This was my eleventh cruise on my fourth different cruise line so I have plenty of information on which to conduct this review.  First the positive:  Alaska is the most beautiful place I have ever seen and this was actually my second Alaska cruise.  Each stop in Alaska was breath taking and offered something different.  The one place we didn't actually stop, Glacier Bay National Park, was the most breath taking of all.  Now for the negative.  Overall the service aboard ship was, in a word, horrible.  With the notable exception of my cabin steward Richard and room service personnel, I found most of the staff to be rude and not very accommodating.  Many request were met with scorn, eye rolling or just outright refusal.  On my ten previous cruises I have never been treated this way.  It wasn't disrespectful, it just that simple requests were politely declined.  The waiters in both the Botticelli and Da Vinci dining rooms, at breakfast and at dinner treated requests such as asking for iced tea or lemonade or requesting something else from the kitchen as if granting it would come out of their pockets.  (We sat at table 130 in the Botticelli dining room for dinner and random places in Da Vinci for breakfast)  It seemed as if the staff was trained to politely decline requests for products that were included in our cruise so that guests would just stop asking.  Any request made for items costing additional money, such as a drink from the bar was immediately treated with the respect I am accustomed to receiving on cruise ships.  Even the design of the ship was inconvenient.  You could not take the elevator directly to the floor of the dining room.  You could however take it to the floor above the dining room and walk down, after passing through the shopping areas which i think was by design.  The final negative has to do with the last stop in Victoria, British Colombia.  We did not arrive there until 7pm and then we were only granted 4 hours there.  Having been there before I looked forward to again visiting the Empress hotel and Craigdarroch Castle but time did not permit on this trip.  In conclusion do take an Alaska cruise, just not on this cruise line.  I am going back to Royal Caribbean and Holland and will never cruise Princess again

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Dining staff in Da Vinci and Botticelli were rude, taking away from the dining experience. Room service staff were exceptional as were the staff in both Share and Crown club, the specialty dining areas

Onboard Activities

Entertainment

1 out of 5
Worst part of the cruise. I am in my 50's, not young but still very active. The entertainment on this ship seemed geared toward people in their 70's. There were virtually no activities after 11pm. Also we were cruising to Alaska where it is very cold. Why were they showing movies outside (Movie Under The Stars) when virtually no one showed up. It would have been much better to show those movies in the theater where the shows were being held.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Room steward Richard was great. Room service staff were as well. Other than that I have never been treated so rudely on a cruise ship and because of that will not return to this cruise line

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Beautiful ship but not user friendly

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The cabin was amazing!!!!!! My cabin steward Richard was amazing as well. The layout, the refrigerator, the bath robes and even a bath tub. My cabin was so nice that I think I spent more time here than I ever have aboard ship before

Thanks for sharing your cruise.

We just finished that cruise and the entire staff was amazing. When I read a review I look for things that show a person just likes to complain. If I don't see anything like that I give the review credibility. You complain about the stop in BC being short and every Princess ad states it is a short stop over. I think you might just like complaining, also reading your review I can almost hear the tone you took with the staff. I have learned when you treat people nice and with respect it is returned. Princess is an excellent cruise lines...

I took the Alaska cruise last year and because the ship was so nice, booked one for this year. I've cruised on silversea, ociania, and regent (which are smaller ships) and thought considering the size of the Ruby that they did a wonderful job. I never ever encountered a rude or disrespectful person on staff.

No elevators to the Bottecelli Dining Room? We had an aft balcony and took the elevators directly to Bottecelli.

I was on the Ruby last year for a 15 day cruise. the staff were all very accommodating and pleasant. the ONLY thing we had problems with we put down to our junior waiter being brand new and sometimes he looked a little overwhelmed. But he did his very best and frankly, forgetting to bring a glass of milk instead of tea or coffee was forgiveable

dadm you would think that if they had bad service all the time they would replace the crew. but then you hear wonderful reviews. and wonderful staff. so i am thinking that either these people are rude to the staff and dont give them respect or they are sourpusses but i have seen a lot of these people have sailed on ncl or carnival and i think they think its the love boat

Dadm, we were on the Ruby for 17 days in April. One example - I asked the waiter for blue or raspberries for breakfast and he went to see if he could get them, but could not. The Maitre de (spelling) came over and explained WHY he could not get what we knew the ship had. But at other times they did find other non-menu items and serve them---with a smile!

I am returning to the Ruby in November and I have read some less than happy reviews. I hope they are wrong. We cruise to relax and enjoy the trip. I can't wait to set sail again.

I don't know you and don't know if you are a "hard to please" person or you actually just had bad service but I do know that it states on many sites/documents that we will only be in Victoria BC for 4 hours so we shouldn't whine about it after the fact. I am actually hoping you are just a "hard to please" person because I am so excited about my upcoming trip 😉

the last stop is listed as only being 4 hours. its because the stop in BC is because it is required by meritime law to make a stop there.

i would like to know how you treated the staff. did you treat them like they were there just to wait on you or did you treat them like humans. and dont say oh i was soooo nice to them. i work retail and am always treated like 2nd class. when i point it out to people they say oh i didnt know or well your just a cashier deal with it. did you introduce yourself ask them how their day has been or where they are from show them kindness or did you just expect them to say yes sir right away sir. remember these people as you say work long hours for very little pay and get very little respect from people. then those same people come back and say they were treated rudely. but yet those people never went and asked how are you doing today they just demand so did you ever ask anyone one the ship how has your day been and say please and thank you

The problem with doing Alaska out of Seattle is that it pushes the ship to its limits to make it to Glacial Bay and back. They have to by law have a foreign port or they are in violation of the Jones law. So the brief stop in Canada keeps it legal but the long route doesn't leave it much time in port.
