Review summary

The Ship was nice and the crew friendly - but it felt a bit like a bait and switch. This was a first cruise after nearly 40 years of marriage. We were supposed to dock at Skagway and take a RR excusion into the mountains - Royal cancelled it 2 weeks before sailing and we docked at some tourist trap called Icy Straits instead. We were then supposed to sail up to Dawes glacier on the inner coastal, Royal cancelled it that very day on the way. We were then supposed to dock and enjoy a day in Canada, Royal cancelled it that very day as well. 3 of our days' vacation plans were cancelled due to these decisions. We were refunded for our RR trip but if we cruise again, we'll try another line.

Service and Staff

The staff was very friendly and worked extremely hard. I'd guestimate 90% of the staff was Indonesian. Could not understand the captain on the loud speaker or the staff person in charge of giving us emergency procedures which was pretty odd.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Was surprised at how much bare metal was showing on a very new ship, there was one day that the deck we were on reeked of sewage, and the last night there was hammering going on until about 2:30am which was also surprising that they would do that kind of work in the middle of the night.

Ship tip

Food in the main dining hall seemed to be the same as what was offered in the buffet - just hit the buffet instead.

Ports of call

Seattle, Washington

The port is pretty much away from everything - nothing to walk to except the ship itself.

Welcome to the wonderful world of cruising. Sorry for your cancellations, but as others have mentioned, there are several reasons and it might happen on any cruise line. Glad you enjoyed much of your Alaskan cruise.

There are some issues with cruising to Alaska that cruisers need to be patient with. 1st is Skagway. They suffered a rockslide at the dock last season, and there is concern that a large boulder at the top of the hill may drop. All this resulted in the docking schedule taking a hit. 2nd is Dawes Glacier. The glacier generates growlers (small ice bergs) that create hazards to marine traffic. I suspect these 2 cancelations we due to safety concerns.

Cruising in Alaska is getting tricky with so many ships wanting to go there. If you want to go to Alaska again try Princess or HAL they get preferential docking as they have been going there forever.
