Review summary

We had great hopes for this cruise, but for us, it was 50-50. We loved certain aspects, but are very critical of others. There are certainly many things Holland can do to make this more enjoyable for travelers, especially those new to Holland and as such don't have any kind of special benefits. (1) Streamline the embarcation process. The majority of the guests are seniors who have traveled a long way and are tired. You can add more personnel to manage this process, provide some refreshments due to long waiting periods. We need, and not merely deserve, food and drink (2) Provide umbrellas for rainy days. We can even buy them if necessary. We were surprised there weren't any. At one port, we saw several other tourists using Viking umbrellas. We were so jealous! (3) Since you don't have any shore excursions included free with the cruise, and we had to pay for everything, please offer your guests FREE bottled/canned water. By charging us $4/can, you're literally nickel and diming us. Not appreciated, and not a good look. (4) Improve your internet service. Terrible, terrible connection, and in some areas, none at all! (5) For what we pay for the cruise, the excursions, etc. include house wine and sodas with the dinners. Charge only for premium drinks and cocktails. Again, don't nickel and dime your guests! (6) Offer complimentary umbrellas and ponchos for those unexpected rainy days, Plastic ponchos won't take up too much room. Include that with a welcome package (which you don't even offer) in every room. (7) Include at least a bottle of water per person FREE everyday for each room. Some of us take medication and will need water. It was a shock that we had to pay for it. An even bigger to see how much it was! (8) Don't use old, stained and frayed napkins at the Lido. Made us feel like second-hand travelers every time we ate there. (9) Believe it or not, some of the breads at the Lido were stale and hard! Improve your quality control methods. (10) Have a show at the theater every night. Not everyone drinks, gambles, or goes off shore. Remember who most of your clients are: Seniors! Most of us even have mobility issues. Account for them. (11) We can't hear the announcements in our room, and we had to open our cabin doors to hear them in the hall. Make sure each room's speaker works.

Embarkation

Terrible planning. Took us 3 hours from start to finish! Couldn't they have had more people checking folks in? Some of us traveled almost 24 hours and were dead-tired. And most of us are seniors. We could have used better facilities and speedier check in.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Lido was just okay. Dining Room was very good. Pinnacle was, as its name suggests, Pinnacle. WHY are they charging for water to take with us to go on YOUR excursions for which we paid? Also, when we arrived around 8:00 pm from one of YOUR excursions, why were there so few stations/choices for dinner? We had to scramble to find something to eat ---- stale bread, fruit mostly.

Pinnacle Grill

5 out of 5

This is by far the best of what you offer. The food is creative and delicious. The service outstanding. Too bad we have to pay after the first complimentary one. Offer lunch times, too, to those of ud who are willing to pay, and not just to your Orange Club guesta

Lido Restaurant

3 out of 5

Just okay.....we learned which stations have good choices. Others are run-of-the-mill. Favorites are omelette stations. But some of your theme foods are not up to par or even taste anything resembling the country's food you purport to serve.

Canaletto

3 out of 5

This wasn't even a separate venue -- they just put up a wall separating it from the Lido. Not a fine dining experience at all. Even the food reflects it

Rolling Stone Lounge

1 out of 5

We kept looking but you don't have a BBKing blues club. Instead, it was turned into a Rolling Stone rock and roll club. WTH?

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
We're seniors, and physical activities are limited to attending seminars, shows. Perhaps add yoga (sit down yoga for seniors) as a physical activity. More ballroom dance lessons (we're of that generation). Enjoyed the trivia sessions. "Classroom" style seminars especially on technology were good...but we couldn't see the flower arranging from the rear of the room.

Guest Services / Excursions

3 out of 5

Very expensive excursions. Had to look for alternatives. Most of the excursions were fine BUT some of the guides forget that we have a senior group of people, some of whom have mobility issues. I had to ask a guide to walk slower and let the others catch up. But our biggest beef with your organization, you are charging for water and other refreshments to go! As expensive as your tours are, you should offer everyone at least a bottle of water, some snacks. Even airlines offer those!

Meeting Rooms

1 out of 5

From the back of the room, we can't see the floral arrangement session. Maybe have a camera project what he's doind will help.We signed up for one technology session, but apparently it was cancelled, but there was no note on the door.

Internet Center

1 out of 5

Terrible, inconsistent, sometimes unavailable

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Every much enjoyed the shows, but why are there no shows EVERY night? Not everyone got off the ship for shore excursions.

Art Gallery

4 out of 5

Very nice. The art team were so accommodating even to those who didn't buy anything

Children's Programs

We don't have children on this cruise which caters mostly to seniors

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Hit and miss. Some servers were not as attentive as they should have been, others were outstanding (standouts were Japur and Jenny from Pinnacle, Dhimas and Djuneidi from Dining Room). We truly appreciated our cabin attendants Arman and Tina (?)

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
We were told the ship was refurbished, but it still looked a bit tired. A couple of times, our favorite areas in the Lido, they removed some seats for repair, but we never saw them again. Napkins at the Lido were frayed --- making it seem like this place is the stepchild of the finer dining areas.

Cabin / Stateroom

1 out of 5
Worst room to be in. We were directly under the Lido, and very early in the morning, or very late at night, we can hear all kinds of noises, like someone was building/removing/rearranging furniture. If they were cleaning, they could have been more careful and considerate of people in these areas!

Ship tip

DON'T.

Disembarkation

Better than embarcation because we were self-assist and just got off the ship without being on any kind of schedule

Umbrellas are available in every room. If you don't find them in your closet, just ask your room steward. Announcements can be heard inside your room by tuning your television to the bow camera channel. I do agree that HAL is nickel and diming guests these days, and they have lost some of their quality control when it comes to dining. Hope they make some of the changes you recommended.

Thanks for your review and comments. However, it sounds like you need to cruise with Viking (many of the things you complain about are resolved when you cruise with Viking). Just be prepared to pay a higher price with Viking.

Nice itinerary. Flying in a day early works best when traveling overseas.

Long list of complaints

You don’t list any other cruises so I am assuming you’re new to cruising and for sure new to HAL. All HAL ships have umbrellas in the back of one of the closets. You can hear all announcements on your TV if you put it on the bow camera channel. Except emergency announcements they do not broadcast general announcements in your room, not everyone wants to hear them. We always bring disposal rain ponchos you can purchase at the dollar store just in case. The drink packages all include water and HAL charges you like all other lines do if you don’t go for that option. If you picked the room under the pool deck or made the mistake of taking the cheaper guaranteed cabin option you got a noisy room. Your issues all seam to come down to you did no research, and you have no experience so you made so pretty common mistakes. As for Viking cruises you won’t like the price.

Oops sorry 😞 thanks

Sorry you didn’t have the experience this time around. Thank you for sharing.

Water is included in the drink package. I have always had an umbrella in my cabin. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy your HAL experience.

Well….looks like Viking is a better fit for you. The main cruise lines operate all the same…..so…can’t see your suggestions catching on
