Review summary

The challenges of cruising to Alaska are real and we expected them. Overall the cruise was good. What wasn't good was a number of unexpected charges that I'm still not sure what they were for. I have come to realize that you double the price you think you're paying for a cruise, but these additional add ons beyond that were an unpleasant surprise.

Embarkation

3 out of 5
Very good

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Staff was excellent food was okay

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5

Entertainment

2 out of 5
Maybe it was because it was a smaller boat, but the entertainment seemed sub-standard

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Very good, but have had better on Norwegian

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Fine

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
It was fine

Ship tip

Deck 5 is cut up, you can't get from one end of the ship to the other. We met some passengers who didn't figure that out and were lost.

Ports of call

Seattle, Washington

3 out of 5

KETCHIKAN (WARD COVE), ALASKA

4 out of 5
Totem park was much more interesting than expected

Cruise Glacier Bay

3 out of 5
Gray day, took away from the experience

Skagway, Alaska

3 out of 5
Choppy seas, got in several hours late. Train was worth it.

Juneau, Alaska

4 out of 5
Juneau itself was a surprise against the mountain with numerous thin waterfalls. Beautiful. The falls a mile from the drop off for Mendenhall Glacier was a high point

Icy Strait Point (Hoonah), Alaska

1 out of 5
Missed because of weather

Victoria, British Columbia

5 out of 5
Turned out great. We got in early because we missed Icy Strait Point and had plenty of time to visit Butchart Gardens

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
Smooth until we got into the long, long line for the buses to the airport.

Thanks for the detailed review. Interesting cruising Alaska in October. We did ours on the Sun in August 2015.

We’ve only done Alaska in the spring. Weather has been fabulous and never missed a port.

Did all the high port fees show when you first booked?

From your comments on the staff you’ve sailed with NCL before, so what charges apart from the standard gratuities did you have that you didn’t expect? Would help to know this, thanks.
