Review summary

This cruise aboard the Norwegian Sun was all we expected. The Panama Canal transit was a highlight, sort of a "Bucket List" item. Having never been to South America, we wanted to see as many different countries as possible. Norwegian made that possible on a reasonable budget in a luxurious surrounding

Embarkation

Long line, but that was expected. Directions were adequate, and all went smoothly.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
The main dining rooms were well staffed, the meals were well prepared. Variety was excellent. We felt no need to go to the specialty venues. The garden buffet was very good. Food was generally well prepared, though I found the fish commonly overcooked. Fruit was excellent and abundant. Vegetables were as well.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Entertainment was diverse and of good quality. Ships own entertainment staff was excellent. Cruise director worthy of special commendation.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Generally excellent,, with a little bumpiness. Berth steward Eugene provided commendable service. We would also commend the "bit" players at the restaurants.. They always made you feel they were genuinely happy you were there.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Generally top drawer, clean and well maintained. The Sun is an older ship and I believe at the end of its refit cycle, but the efforts of the officers and crew hide this reality very well.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
The cabin was remarkably similar to all I have experience on cruises. About 220 sq ft including balcony laid out well enough with Kingsize bed (two twins actually) , very comfortable mattress., a day bed/sofa, dressing table, closet (adequate hangers) and other storage ( we found it quite adequate). The bath was small (not exactly a surprise) , However, we had no problem performing the necessary functions.

Ship tip

Norwegian is like sailing for the rest of us. It has most of what sailing has come to mean, but provides this luxury on a family budget, as well as upscale options should you desire them.
