Review summary

The Norwegian Sun is a small ship, however we had about the same experience as on other NCL ships, which is generally good. Of note: Breakfast dining room service always falls short and the Sun is no exception. Coffee not refilled, slow service, forgotten items, staff reluctant to handle special requests, we have just come to expect it, but the buffet is worse so.....one previous available smoking areas has been eliminated, annoying. VERY friendly ship staff, steward, bar and dining generally everyone is pleasant. The entertainment: ship staff good and bad, as usual, the guests were great! We will avoid the Sun...just too small for us, but for Alaska you need small ships.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The problem with the buffet is ALWAYS the people, not the buffet itself. Dining room breakfast, we say it every time, needs improvement. Apologies get old when there is little to no improvement time after time.

Entertainment

Guest entertainment awesome. The ship staff shows: poor choices for persons who sang, the shows should highlight what the cast can handle as opposed to forcing the concept and staff when the outcome is so poor.

Ship Quality

Nice, just too small for us.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Very nice balcony room, clean and our steward was great.

Ship tip

Le Bistro is wonderful, food service and ambiance. We would definitely recommend. Moderno has great food, but DO NOT fill up on the salad bar, lots of meats to choose from. Warning!! The salad bar area seating is directly under the basketball court and the noise is terrible, constant banging.

Ports of call

Seward (Anchorage), Alaska

3 out of 5
Not the worst port....but it's fine and if you stay in Seward the night prior to cruising you can board ahead of those taking the train or bus from Anchorage....a plus!!

Cruise Hubbard Glacier

Icy Strait Point (Hoonah), Alaska

3 out of 5
Beautiful scenery, however ATV shore excursion was a bust...awful and expensive. The port was 'created or enhanced' just to service cruise ships, so everything is way overpriced....disappointing. Enjoy it from the ship.

Juneau, Alaska

No idea....total washout that day. Another time perhaps.

Cruise Sawyer Glacier

Did not see due to bad weather.

Skagway, Alaska

5 out of 5
Small town, touristy, but beautiful scenery.

Ketchikan, Alaska

5 out of 5
Touristy....but your last chance to get something or see something of Alaska and it is scenic.

Cruise Inside Passage, Alaska

3 out of 5
Not much in the way of wildlife or scenery at this point between Ketchikan and Vancouver and it was somewhat cloudy anyway.

Vancouver (Canada Place), British Columbia

The city tour was fine, which also provided transportation to the airport.
