Review summary

My husband and I were first time cruisers, first visit to Alaska.  Very glad we chose the cruise for our first taste of alaska and it's splendor.  We liked the cruise aspect because we were able to see more towns/areas of Alaska than if we drove(some of the towns are not accessible via roads), and much easier than if we tried to coordinate on our own with a ferry etc.  If you choose a cruise, the excursions are a MUST to truly appreciate and feel like you are experiencing alaska, plus, for us it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for us, so we figured go big or go home.  (which unfortunately gets very expensive, but well worth it.  I would highly recommend a helicopter flight to a glacier, it feels like you are on another planet!).   The ports on the glacier bay northbound were nice and perfectly placed between each other.  I only wish we would get more time in town to not feel so rushed and be able to explore beyond the commercialized touristy parts of town more.  The cruise staff on the sun were FANTASTIC, everyone is SO attentive to your needs and always happy, willing to help and go the extra mile. This means ALL staff, not just the cruise directors, but even all service staff etc.  They really make you feel at home, like family.  The entertainment was a little cheesy, but we still participated in many events/things and had a truly fabulous time.  Even my quieter husband participated in some of the game shows and had a really good time!!  The captain of the ship is a truly neat, humble man, I enjoyed the meet and greets, and question and answer times.  Probably my only or biggest concern was all the push to spend money on board.  It just felt like everything was getting thrown at us constantly, and not at inexpensive prices.  Kinda leaves you feeling like the ship is a money vacuum machine...but truly, even that being said, we had a WONDERFUL TIME!!!!

They have the most amazing pretzels that look like a little dinner roll...but SOO yummy! Of all the wonderful food, funny that was one of my highlights, haha!

Ship Quality

Bathroom smelt like urine the day we entered the room and smelt like that the entire trip. Otherwise we were impressed with the cleanliness of the ship and felt the design was ok.

Cabin / Stateroom

LOVED having a balcony! We had our own private balcony to view the glaciers from and to spend time on in the am's, pm's when we wanted more subdued time on the ship. LOVED the balcony!(it wasn't anything special, just nice being able to step out into fresh air, view the scenery(even from bed) from the convenience of our room vs. having to go on deck to do so.

Ship tip

Moderno was a cool restaurant to visit, unique way of serving or offering "all the menu" as they would bring pieces to your table and you could say yes or decline the meat etc. I've never done that anywhere before, and thought it was a nice way of sampling all the things on the menu!

Ports of call

take a taxi to the port, it will make your life much easier!

Cruise Inside Passage, Alaska

Make sure to take advantage of the excursions, a must to truly experience Alaska. Personal favorite was a helicopter ride onto a glacier. Only wish we had more time on the glacier. Maybe there are extended trips that cost a little more?

Ketchikan, Alaska

We went on a kayak excursion to orca cove, and had a nice smoked salmon dinner after, cool.

Juneau, Alaska

this is where we did our helicopter excursion to the glacier. felt like we were on another world!

Skagway, Alaska

The shop people were a little stand offish which had not been our experience other places, kind of a surprise. Train ride had beautiful scenery, but if you're from a mountainous area already and have seen beautiful mountain scenery before, I would save my money and try something else.

Cruise Glacier Bay

Cruise Hubbard Glacier

Another personal favorite of the trip. This is a very active glacier, so we were able to see many impressive glacier pieces falling into the ocean, it was awesome. White thunder...you'll find out what I'm talking about ;-)

Maark, I would say in Ketchikan I would do the Kayak excursion to orca cove, in Juneau a helicopter ride to a glacier, and in skagway, wish we would have done something like a jeep ride or something different than the train as we live in a mountainous area, and it was ok, but nothing spectacular.  I have heard a lot of people enjoy the train ride, however, we would have preferred something else.

great review. knowing what you know now what would be your recommendations for port excursions in each port: ketchikan, juneau and skagway?

Welcome to the world of cruising. Thank you for posting your first review here on this website. Alaska is a favorite destination of mine, too.
