Things no one bothers to let you know by KerryM1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

1.The ship had severall mishaps - time delay due to fire in one of three engines, shut down one and only had two left. No information regarding early season cruises that limit the chances of seeing the GLACIERS(not safe) 2. No information about law concerning embarking at different locations(whether it is the Airlines fault or not! - missed the 1st 2 days of cruise as a result of airline 5 hour mechanical delay) 3. Automatic tipping is excessive and does not give the indivdual the opportunity to thank those that do a GOOD JOB and those that are mediocre.

A satisfying cruise by KarenW2

This was our third Norwegian cruise and the first on the Star. My mother, two brothers and I enjoyed everything and regret the missed opportunities due to early break up at the glacier and engine problems at the end of the trip.

Norwegian Star Alaska 2007 by DarrenK

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

The ship overall was nice and clean and the staff helpful. Food was above average for a cruise ship and overall you have a lot of choices for types. The ship did way over charge for Soda ($1.75/can) and Beer ($4.50/bottle of Budweiser). The reason for the very low rating is simple, the one Glacier we did see on the ship was a hanging glacier that that basically looked like a lot of snow on the mountain. Some people didn't even think that it was a Glacier since most of the mountains have show on it and it is hard to differentiate the two. Sawyer Glacier is in Tracey's Arm. This is a narrow area that icebergs usually have a hard time moving thru. This makes it impossible to pass for the larger ships like the Star. You would have much more luck going thru Glacier Bay with another Cruise Line. If you do take this cruise expect to pay for excursions to see the scenery or you will come back very disappointed.

The ship was very nice, not the best I have ever been on but it was still very nice. The were plenty of resteraunts, with a wide variety of choices. Many bars and places to get drinks. The prices for drinks were a little high. The shipboard entertainment was also very.

My First Cruise by GamalielD

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

First I thought vacation cruises are only for the rich and I was too reluctant to go along with my relatives invitation. As we are approaching the port in Seattle where Norwegian Star was dock, I was already amazed by the size of it. It's huge and as I walked thru the lobby, I can't believe how beautiful it was. Me and my wife was just so excited that when the band started playing as they were giving the passengers a "sail away" barbecue party, we started dancing, not minding others who also have fun of their own at the upper deck.

Alaska was beautiful by DarleneF2

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

The service on the ship was very good. The people were wonderful. The food wasn't as good as the food I've had on Celebrity or even Carnival. My friend felt like she was a prisoner because she doesn't like spending a lot of time at sea. We were at sea for two full days -- going and coming -- she was bored. Because they allow smoking, we really couldn't go anywhere (Casino, Entertainment Areas...the shows, etc.,) without getting second-hand smoke. As with any cruise line, their goal is to separate you from your money so get ready to feel it in your next credit card bill.

Alaska is a must!!! by CruiseL1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

This was our first time cruising with this fleet. Although we were alittle disappointed we really enjoyed the staff. Our Captain was wondeful. The food in the buffet was ok.The desserts were alittle bland and had no taste to them,We really enjoyed the few restaurants we went to The Aqua,The LaTorta(Italian) and the Versalle.(The other restaurants you had to pay a cover charge $20 each.)The staff was wonderful and the food was great. We booked a Oceanveiw room which we don't usually do(we love the Balcony)but thought we would give it a whirl.Well they never put the twin beds together so we slept apart the whole cruise. But all in all Alaksa is a must see it is unexplainable!! Please take one extra day and stay in Seattle overnight before the cruise it's truley a Wonderful Place.Hotel, Doubletree right near the pier!!!! I wish we could take the bed and pillows home.Wonderful people, dine @ Elliotts on the pier you won't forget it. Alaska was like a dream!!!!!

A Cruise to Remember by BarbaraB2236908

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

From the moment we boarded the ship, I was in awe of how beautiful everything was! We tried to make reservations at all the wonderful dining rooms, and actually ate in most of them. There was always somewhere to go and relax and listen to music. The shopping area was great! I really liked how everything was in one large area instead of small cubicles. I can't say enough about the wonderful food. Everything was so fresh! The Spinnaker lounge was a great place to go when leaving the cities we visited. You have a beautiful view from there. Our room was small but very well thought out with plenty of storage and a nice large shower. We had an absolutely wonderful cruise.

The ship had been renovated recently. Clean and well cared for. We certainly enjoyed our trip. Loved the Free Styling idea. No need to dress up - free to do anything at anytime. Enjoyed going to what ever restaurant we wanted and when we wanted.

Great Cruise by JoeS22

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

Nice ship... they do what the cruise line companies do best, find creative way to seperate you from your money and have you be happy about it. Mexican Riviara was good but not enough time in many ports. Only had time to do one item so if you have a family with many interest then you will have to find a way to make it work. Over all I enjoyed the FreeStyle type of Cruising that they have for the meals and the many Restaurants. The Down side is that they put there hand in your pocket again for reservation fees on many of the sit down with server restaurants. They do make the tipping easy by puting it on your bill daily and it is reasonable.

What an experience!!!! by LyndaB3

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

The STAR is absolutely gorgeous! The Versailles diningroom is one of the loveliest ever and the Grand Atrium is indeed "GRAND". We found all of the restaurants to be wonderful with the exception of the Blue Lagoon which is just odd. The Stardust Theatre is gorgeous and the Agua Dining Room is so romantic and intimate. The Barong Spa is beautiful and offers everything you could possibly want. The STAR is truly a STAR!!!

Second cruise on the Star by RickJ25235177

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

After having a GREAT time on the NCL Star last year, we decided to bring a group of friends on the same cruise this year. As before, the vessel's crew played a huge part in our enjoyment of the cruise. Stewards, wait staff, even maintenance personnel went out of their way to ensure that we were well cared for. NCL should be commended for putting together such an amazing group of people. The ship is comfortable and easy to navigate. Staterooms, though COMPACT, were quite comfortable and well laid out to provide ample room for both us and our stuff. (Note to self: don't bring so much stuff next time.) Beds and bedding are really comfortable ... sheet/blanket is a bit warm for Mexico. Being neurotic sleepers, we packed our own pillows and lightweight blanket, which ain't such a bad idea. Food services onboard provide a terrific choice of dining options. Buffet (Market Cafe) was our main source for breakfasts and snacks before and after trips ashore. Like most buffets, the Market Cafe compromises freshness and quality for convenience. It's cafeteria food ... but really good cafeteria food. Sit-down restaurants were nicely varied in theme and selection. Surcharge restaurants weren't necessarily any better than the standard restaurants, but they did provide a substantial variety onboard. Our favorites were Endless Summer for Southwest and Tex-Mex dining and Aqua for group dining. Note: if it's possible, make reservations early, or you'll end up eating while you could be watching one of the Star's feature shows. Speaking of shows, NCL gets some great talent onboard! The Jean Ryan dance company is consistenly entertaining. It's amazing what the dancers can do on a stage that doesn't necessarily stand still (the Showtime Theater is in the bow of the boat, and can be a bit disorienting in a medium to large swell). The shows are a bit "five blocks off of the strip" but the performers are really fun to watch. Both 2006 and 2007 cruises featured a couple of headliners as well. We fell in love (figuratively) with Shawn Farquahar, an engaging and hugely talented magician. The cool thing about the entertainers on the Star is that they tend to be very accessible and Shawn seemed delighted to interact with the passengers. We hope to have an opportunity to see him perform again! All-in-all, there's no question that we'd jump aboard the Star at our first opportunity in the future. Now the (petty) complaints: 1. The indoor pool at the Barong Spa was accessible to all passengers on the previous cruise. This time, there was a substantial daily fee to access that area of the ship. Note to NCL: the Oasis Pool area is always LOUD, crowded and frantic with activity. For those of us who wanted to enjoy a swim without having to endure a barrage of "skinny leg" and "beer belly" contests, the Barong was the only option. Either add a pool elsewhere, or drop the additional fee for the indoor pool. 2. Drink prices. I know it's a vital profit center ... but for crying out loud. At least make the soft drinks a bit more reasonable. 3. Healthy options in the Market Cafe (qualifies as more of a request than a complaint). How about adding some whole grain breads and soymilk as options on the buffet line for those that prefer healthier foods? 4. Another request of NCL ... Would it make sense to have some conveniently placed bus trays in key locations around the vessel (specifically, the Promenade Deck) where passengers could place dirty dishes, cups and glasses? The crew was great about picking up after passengers, but it might be even better if passengers could learn a bit about cleaning up after themselves. 5. Slot machines. Tighter than tight. It would be fun, once in a while, to win something back.

Cruising with a handicapped person by JacquelynB

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

The ship is very handicapped friendly. We were traveling with a three wheeled scooter. My husband could move freely aboard the ship and participate in all the activities of interest. There was always a place for him to park and a friendly face to help! It was our first cruise to experience as handicapped and we were delighted how smoothly it all went. I must add that getting through the airport (LAX) and moving the scooter by plane was very easy also. Ground transportation needs to be worked out before you go. BUT GO YOU'LL LIKE IT!

Disappointed by JanellH

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

Have cruised other lines and wanted to try a new line. First time cruisers seemed to really enjoy it, especially if they had children. Nice swimming pool for families. Not pleasant for us. Small and no pool for quieter couples to relax. Difficult to get to sun chairs. Had to climb stairs and B-B-Q smoke often blew that direction. Enjoyed the B-B-Q ribs, though. NCL changed iternary the day before we left. Didn't go to the 2 ports we most wanted to see. Food was good to excellent depending on the restaurant. Liked the 13 different places to eat.
