Review summary

We like this cruise so much we've now taken it three times!  For anyone wanting to visit the Mediterranean, the lineup of ports of call on this cruise just can't be beat and the per-day cost to see so many ports in such comfort and with so little fuss makes it a real value, too.  We've taken it both ways (Venice to Barcelona and the reverse), and either way, it's a great mix of ports, sea days, and onboard experiences.  Spirit is the oldest ship in the NCL fleet and she's showing her age a bit, but she's still a nicely appointed ship, comfortable, fast, and quiet.  Our cruising experience is always about the ports of call and the dining aboard ship, and our dining experience aboard NCL's Spirit and Jewel has been a cut above the others we've sailed with.  We don't choose a ship or a cruise based on whether the ship has rock climbing walls, art auctions, or golf aboard... only where the ship goes and how we'll be living and dining aboard.  Our experience with crew, staff, and room stewards has always been excellent aboard NCL, and although we mostly explore ports and destinations on our own now, NCL certainly has a good selection of ship's excursions available in each port and they are well run.

Our only negatives about the ship have to do with her age.  The cabins have no place to plug electrical appliances and chargers in, you can't use standard hair dryers in the plugs, and the ship's finishes and fit-out are generally showing their age.  Attempting to use internet at sea is a waste of time and money (we go ashore, have a meal at midday, and use the cafe's wi-fi for free while enjoying local cuisine).  Trying to find a quiet place to read and watch the beautiful Mediterranean on sea days can be a challenge sometimes, but patiently waiting for a space in a favorite spot works.  Spirit is still quite decent and serviceable though, and our few negatives are by no means a deal-breaker for sailing aboard this ship.  The evening shows were good to very good, and we went to all of them on this cruise, which is unusual for us.  A good variety, excellent talent.

Do your own shopping around, and you'll find that a 12-night cruise in this many great ports, at this price, is difficult to beat.  And by the way, the ports of Kotor (Montenegro) and Dubrovnik (Croatia) are excellent, charming new additions to this itinerary.  We miss the port of Istanbul that used to be on this itinerary, but the new ones are good.

This cabin has a great location... close to elevators, stairs, Raffles Court (buffet), and straight down to embarkation/disembarkation, but it directly adjoins the Atrium (music plays till 11PM or midnight and can be heard in the room a bit), and sometimes loud guests get off the elevator and walk by. Otherwise, good location and a nice room.

Ship tip

Go forward to the Galaxy room when sailing into or out of port, especially on rainy or stormy days. Snug, a great view, and usually quiet. Be sure to go down the spiral staircase into the bridge viewing room that contains interesting mementos from ports where the ship has called.

Ports of call

Venice, Italy

Spend a day pre- or post-cruise in Venice. Stay at the Santa Chiara hotel, which is VERY convenient to the ship, public transport, and walking around Venice. A vaporetto stop practically right outside the hotel!

Kotor, Montenegro

You've got to climb the 1,380 steps up to the high lookout on the city wall! What a view! Great dining down in the old city, too.

Be different and ride the metro to Herculaneum if you've already been to Pompeii and Amalfi. Very low cost, and almost as interesting as Pompeii. And of course you've got to have margherita pizza!

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

5 out of 5
We didn't get to go into Rome on this cruise (public transport workers on strike), so we stayed in Civitavecchia. Nice, quiet, clean town with beaches and good dining

Livorno (Florence & Pisa), Italy

5 out of 5
Save money and take the train into Florence on your own. The station is only about 10 minutes' walk from the Duomo. On the way back, stop in Pisa (no additional fare on the train)!

Toulon, France

Everything is closed on Sunday except the market, which is only open for a few hours.

Barcelona, Spain

Get around on your own on the metro! Very inexpensive, takes you virtually anywhere you want to go in the city, is safe and speedy. Buy a 10-pass ticket for the day, and take your time enjoying everything the city has to offer!

back on the itinerary. We also used free wi fi at or near the ports before we boarded to check in on things back home so we never felt the need to "plug in" on board. Food in the specialty restaurants was excellent and good in the free ones. Our balcony room was very comfortable and service on board was great.

Which have taken place since that time. Our group of 4 couples hired a local tour company and we felt quite safe with our guides who were Muslim women who wore western style clothing. We learned a lot from them about the culture, customs and politics of Turkey. Because of the attacks that have happened since, I totally understand why NCL no longer stops in Turkey. Hopefully someday, Turkey will be

1/2 Your summary is excellent. I was on the Spirit in May 2015 and I loved the experience. I could not agree more with your criteria for selecting a cruise because of it's ports and comfort aboard the ship. I was fortunate to go to Istanbul and Ephesus and experience these unique places. Initially, we were concerned about safety before we we arrived and that was before all the terrorist attacks
