Book rooms centrally located on ship as this is a smaller ship and you feel more movement on it . Be flexible as your itinerary can change especially during these times of the pandemic , conflict over seas and weather .

Make sure that you do not get a room on the exit route for port calls. Our original room was on that route and itwould have been a real problem with people lined up and going past your room continuously.

Everything is up charged. You will get billed for daily room maintenance at 18.00 PER PERSON! The is nothing that is not up charged. Wifi 75 “free” mins is gone the first day unless you turn off your phone. Then they slam you on an “up charge” to get wifi. How else can you possibly keep in touch with members of your party without it. Cost me an additional 129.00 to have wifi for texting on 2 devices. EVERYTHING is going to cost you more once you are on the ship… things not discussed by booking agents.

Tip your bartenders!! I rarely saw anyone else leave a tip. There is a small gratuity included in the bill, but the staff mostly send their pay home, so I gladly left a cash tip. Don’t include it on your card, that money goes to the company, not the staff.

We would recommend that they select a cabin with a balcony, get the COVID test on the earliest date allowed and, if going to Bermuda, immediately apply for travel authorization as soon as they have their negative test.

Don’t be afraid to make your vacation your own. Going into our first cruise you mostly hear stories of cruises being a non-stop party where you’ll be socializing and meeting all kinds of new people if you want to or not. Turns out that’s not true. I met no one new and had a great time. The Gem seems like an ideal ship if you just want to find a nice little, quiet bubble to call your own and be anti-social.
