Review summary

Back in September 2019 we decided to book our first cruise for the following October. Turned out 2020 wasn’t the right year to be doing that. Took our future cruise credit and booked our second first cruise. Turned out early 2021 wasn’t the right time to be doing that. Took our future cruise credit and eventually booked our third first cruise which was this one. Finally we found the right time to be doing that. So, it was a long wait, an itinerary change replacing two ports, a second itinerary change completely eliminating a port, a drag of three straight sea days on the way home because of that eliminated port, and a mild case of the Covid a couple days after getting home but it was worth the wait, had a great time, and would absolutely do it again.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Booked the first check-in time of 9 and got there about 9:15. Already a lengthy line at that point as I guess two years into a pandemic and at the tail end of winter people were eager to get their sunny holidays started. Three stages to go through as they check vaccination documents first, then a security check, then the check-in. Lines got shorter as we worked our way down the building and all was done in about half-an-hour. Nothing too annoying.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
We tried a variety of different places throughout the cruise as there are plenty of options to keep things fresh. Had the three meals at specialty restaurants included so we made sure to use those as well. Food was at least good throughout but there were of course a few buffet options that were consistently underwhelming. Seating at the sit down restaurants was always done quickly and the food was always brought out hot and fresh within minutes of ordering.

Cagney's Steakhouse

4 out of 5

Used one of our specialty meals here. Included appetizer, an entrée, two sides, and desert. Sides were almost comically small, especially if you were paying the $8 menu price for them. For free they’re fine and it’s not like you’re going to a steakhouse for their steamed broccoli anyway. The steak on the other hand was well worth coming here for. Easily better than the prime rib I had at either O’Sheehan’s or the Grand Pacific. In case you’re curious the steamed broccoli was kind of bland even by steamed broccoli standards.

Magenta Main Dining Room

4 out of 5

Ate here once. Only open for supper and has the same menu as the Grand Pacific. Much smaller than the Grand Pacific and looks and feels less classy. Food is of the same quality but service was a bit slower here. Still not a long wait for our food but not as fast as it was everywhere else.

Garden Café

4 out of 5

Ate here a few times as you just can’t beat the convenience. Not a fan of crowds and spent most of the cruise trying to avoid people so usually avoided it for breakfast and lunch since it seemed to be busiest then. Fortunately lots of seating and if you walk all the way down to the third room it was always quiet and sparsely filled. Good assortment of food for all meals but after 10 days some of the regular items started getting boring. Theme nights were funny since they usually amounted to one or two different items that sort of fit the theme and a cake that said Welcome to “________” night. In the end it’s a buffet so you should know what to expect.

Moderno Churrascaria

5 out of 5

Ate here twice. When first researching cruises and cruise lines I stopped as soon as I saw Norwegian has a Brazilian Steakhouse. We’ve been to many different ones on land over the years and is our go to if we want an expensive meal. Is Moderno the best we’ve ever ate at? No. It was still very good and well worth the visits. The first night the gauchos were bringing the meat much faster than they did the second night but you don’t go to a Brazilian Steakhouse looking for a quick meal, so that was fine. Can’t say anything about the salad bar since if you spend too much time filling up there then you’re doing it wrong.

Grand Pacific Main Dining Room

5 out of 5

Came here a couple times for breakfast, a couple for lunch, and once for supper. The nicest of the dining rooms with lots of naked mermaid art and ample seating. If you have the time for a sit down breakfast or lunch this is a great place to go since it was never busy and service was always fast and the food quality is as good as it gets for the included free dining options. Supper time was busier but still not packed and service was just as fast.

O'Sheehan's Bar & Grill

4 out of 5

Ate here several times across all meals. Another great place for breakfast or lunch as it was never busy at those times. Breakfast was brought out super quick and fresh made was much better than the runny buffet scrambled eggs. Lunch and supper menus were the same and just your standard pub fare. Each night had a blue plate special which was usually very good. If you’re looking to get away from the buffet for a night but still want something casual the blue plate special is an excellent choice. It does overlook the atrium where there is usually something going on so not a good choice if you want to eat somewhere without a lot of background noise.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Almost always an assortment of different activities going on or available at any time. For the person that was unable to ever sleep in past 5am there are certainly almost no options between 5 and 8am. It’s nice to enjoy having the whole ship pretty much to yourself for a couple hours but you’re really limited to walking the promenade deck. Bonus there, if you’re up early enough is that at the back of the ship you can smell the baking they’re doing for breakfast in the Grand Pacific. The promenade deck also provides limited seating if you’re looking for something out of the sun and much quieter than the top decks. During the day I did find there are a good mix of things available both if you’re looking to be right in the middle of the action or if you’re wanting a quieter option.

Basketball / Volleyball Court

5 out of 5

I spent a good amount of time here. Great place to get out in the sun, get some exercise and almost never was there anyone else there. At the start of the cruise the balls were overinflated and wouldn’t go through the net and by the end they were getting a bit flat so they could use a better basketball maintenance person to make sure the balls are kept at the optimal inflation level.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
There were a good variety of different stage shows throughout the cruise so there is probably something for everyone at least one night. If you prefer something a bit more intimate than there were also nightly events in the Spinnaker Lounge with the cruise director staff which typically involve more audience participation.

Stardust Theater

3 out of 5

Went to a couple shows here and while the performers were really good the theatre itself is in need of some updating. The first show we sat at floor level. Leg room in the seats was limited and the back support for the seat in front was right at knee level so my knees were digging into a board the whole show. The second show we sat in the balcony which is somewhat hidden and as such there was almost no one up there. Massive leg room if you sit in the front row of the balcony which was great. However the balcony was right at speaker height so it was very loud when the speakers are basically right in front of you. It also made the speaker feedback much more obvious, so the show just didn’t sound as good when sitting in the balcony. Which was unfortunate since once again the performers themselves were good.

Spinnaker Lounge

5 out of 5

A very nice venue as it kind of includes a bit of everything all in one place. If you come in the morning before the events of the day start it’s a quiet place to sit with front facing ocean views. The bar there is also very empty when no events are going on so the bartenders will occasionally walk around to check if anyone wants anything. When the events get going there is a nice variety of seating so if you want to be right in the action or lounging further back there’s a seating option to suit everyone’s mood.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The staff was great. Always greet you with a smile and at least give off the impression that they’re enjoying their jobs and want to do their best to do what they can to make sure you have a good vacation. I don’t know if Norwegian goes out of their way to hire morning people but everyone somehow seemed perkier the earlier in the day it was. Our room steward did his job in keeping our room clean but he never introduced himself or said anything beyond “hi” if we passed in the hall, so I can’t provide his name or give him any additional praise.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Had the benefit of a room right at mid-ship and right in between all the main floors so everything on the ship felt really close and easy to get around. Most of the action is centred around the atrium, Spinnaker, and the pool during the day so that makes it easy to either find where things are happening or find quiet places where things aren’t happening. The atrium is kind of small for some of the things going on there but the seating in O’Sheehan’s that overlooks the atrium offers some extra room if you don’t mind being further away. The Grand Pacific is kind of oddly placed at the back of the ship and between floors. Kind of easy to miss which could be part of the reason it always seemed so empty. Cleanliness was not an issue. It was hard to go more than 30 seconds without seeing someone cleaning something.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Originally booked for an inside cabin on the 5th deck but got upgraded to a balcony and we really lucked out on the random room assignment. 9th floor so it was only two or three flights either up or down to get to everything. Three rooms down from the midship elevator so we were close enough that we didn’t need to walk down the long, narrow hall to get to our room but just far enough that we didn’t hear any elevator traffic noise. The cabin itself was big enough to move comfortably around in for two people. Wouldn’t want more than that in this room. Only issue was the weird setup for the toilet. It doesn’t really need to be in its own tiny, closed off section of the bathroom that provides almost no leg room when sitting or getting up and down.

Ship tip

Don’t be afraid to make your vacation your own. Going into our first cruise you mostly hear stories of cruises being a non-stop party where you’ll be socializing and meeting all kinds of new people if you want to or not. Turns out that’s not true. I met no one new and had a great time. The Gem seems like an ideal ship if you just want to find a nice little, quiet bubble to call your own and be anti-social.

Ports of call

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

4 out of 5
Did the double decker bus tour. It covers a bit of each half of the island and made a few stops along the way. The 15 minute stop at a marina to look at boats didn’t seem overly necessary. The 15 minutes at Maho Beach was obviously too short. The 20-30 minutes at the rum place and the cheese place were longer than they needed to be and felt like blatant product placement but it gets people to shop local and spend those tourist bucks, so I understand it. Good excursion if you’re looking to see a bit of many different parts of the island without focusing on any specific thing.

Tortola, British Virgin Islands

4 out of 5
Did the Tortola by land and sea excursion. A good choice as it allows you to see the island without having to drive it yourself. When it comes to motion sickness the high seas have nothing on the roads of Tortolla. They do offer a lot of scenic outlooks both overlooking the town and neighbouring islands. The switch from the road part of the trip to the sea part is a bit weird. You just get dumped at a marina with a few shopping locations and told a boat will be there in 30 minutes to an hour. The sea portion was entertaining with stories about the island and lots of joking around.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Were two of the first ones off the ship with self-disembarkation and it was super fast. Took just about as long waiting for the very slow moving elevator in the parking garage to get up to our car as it did to get off the ship and cleared through customs.
