Review summary

We were traveling with young kids and just wished that the pool was more kid friendly and that kids club was open longer. I’m guessing that they don’t want parents to go into port if their kids are in kids club, but it seems that the system could not allow parents to scan out when trying to disembark. Other than that everything was great.

Everything went smoothly. Upgrading to priority was nice so we could skip the check in lines out in the hot sun.

Food was decent, the specialty restaurants were definitely better. Irish pub had the best overall breakfast.

Onboard Activities

Everything was great but I wish the pool was more kid friendly. The pools at the shallowest was 4.5ft. So most littler kids had life jackets or water wings.

Bands were great but I wish there were a couple more kid friendly shows in the theater. The magician was great.

The kids absolutely loved kids club. I only wish the hours included some when we were in port.

The inside cabin was great for my daughter and I. I missed having a window from time to time but it was great to be able to sleep in when we didn’t need to be anywhere right away.

Ship tip

Book specialty restaurants a month or so before boarding for days where you will be cruising during dinner time.

The kids club is not intended to be day care so you can explore ports without them. The Gem is not geared for families with smaller children.

NCL LIED! No stop in Venice

Overall a good cruise, but the last-second itinerary change left us scrambling to adjust pre-paid excursions (very stressful) and we didn't get to see Venice at all, the very port we bought this cruise for. Total lack of communication by NCL.
