Review summary

I recently returned from my  10 day cruise on the Gem.....definitely not uneventful.First let me say that the crew on this ship busted there a**es to make things right. We arrived and boarded without any incident. I noticed a lot of younger toddler age children running about coughing and sneezing at the buffet. The crew was at the entrance at all time spraying hands to make sure hands were clean..I came down with a cold 2 days later.I found the  ships gym to be very small and overcrowded. On the 2 day we ventured into the adult hot tub that was far from hot. On the day after we left San Juan we noticed that the crew was serving food at the buffet instead of helping yourself..They even poured your coffee.....Later in the day the captain made an anouncment that people were reporting a gastro intestinal infection was going around and that "a handful of people" were sick. Also we notice that the pools was drained and cleaned several times We decided to not eat at the buffet and drink only bottled water. We got off the ship at St Thomas and toured St Johns..The next day we were denied port at St Martin because of the outbreak. The Captain announced that we would have a day at sea and reminded all to be vigilant with hand washing. We were never compensated for missing a port..People who reported an illness were quarantine to there room for the rest of the cruise. This illness was definite downplayed...In speaking with several other passengers one who claimed to be a swimming pool expert we came to a conclusion that there was an issue with the swimming pools and hot tubs. We did not enter a pool or hot tub. We also had several issues with the toilet. It was corrected and reoccurring.(wouldn't flush)It was addressed in a timely manner

When I returned I found that this was not the first bout with GI issues on this ship. The "handful" of sick passengers turned out to be 130...More than a handful....I don't know what the answer is to this issue...One problem is the unsupervised children spreading germs all about the ship.

Service in the general dining was slow. The food was just OK and the staff was overworked and short...I don't think I will be going on another cruise for a while

I do the same thing, I bring little purse sized bottles of sanitizer, and a bigger bottle kept in cabin refill them. Also lysol wipes to wipe down door knobs, bathroom fixtures, and TV remote in our cabin.

It can happen on any ship. With so many people and especially some are not clean. I bring bottles of hand sanitizer and use it all the time. Even when you are in the dining room use the sanitizer after handling the menu. Just think how many times people touch that.

I'm sure to norovirus will probably be done by then. Just keep washing your hands

Ugh! Just booked for May 14th! I hope all is resolved by then. Thank you for the warning regarding the buffet.

The norovirus is spreading rampant this year on boats AND land. I'm sorry you had a less than satisfying vacation. Unfortunately it's not the cruise lines fault and they try their bests to keep in contained. Only so much they can do. Hopefully it doesn't keep you from cruising again and your next experience is much better!

Considering how fast the virus spreads, the fact that 95% of the passengers on the ship didn't get sick, I would say the crew and medical staff did a very good job.

We had more than one cruise with noro problem. Our moto - wash your hands few times a day especially before and after using restrooms, sanitize before each meal and do not touch your face or ears at any time. So far it working. 13 cruises without any noro problems.
