Review summary

The service and the staff and the nightly shows were just about the only good parts of the cruise experience.  The daily activities were sorely lacking (first time Ive ever been bored on a cruise) or you had to pay extra or the activity was related to a sales pitch.  There were only 2 pools and they were right next to each other, causing everyone to be in the same place at the same time and never ONCE were we able to find an unoccupied lounge chair.  Everytime we went swimming we had to put our belongings on the floor or in a cubby.  There were no good movies to watch in the cabin, and the movies that did play we never knew when they would start so we would always catch them in the middle.  Having a large screen or a seperate theather for movie viewing would have been nice. And finally the food was most nights terrible.  Lots a gelatin was used in the desserts, we were introduced to nothing new or exciting, and there was no midnight chocolate buffet or mexican night (2 cruise staples). My fiance actually LOST 10 POUNDS on this cruise because he was eating so little!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
Food was mostly plain, boring, nothing new or exciting, no chocolate buffet or theme nights like Mexcian. Desserts used too much gelatin and my fiance lost 10 pounds from a lack of foods that he liked.

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5
We love trivia and games and only found TWO activities to participate in, in the 10 days we were onboard! No good movies to watch And bowling and was extra money! That's just wrong!

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The nightly shows were fantastic but the only other entertainment was music (bands, lounge singers or a dj. That got old very quickly

Service and Staff

5 out of 5

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
The cabin was always clean and well supplied but there wasnt enough room to simply walk around the bed to get in and out and the bathroom was TINY!! You had to sit sideways on the toilet because your knees would touch the wall and everytime I would brush my hair in the mirror my arm would bang against the shower door. Also when showering in the shower we would constantly bang our arms against the walls and doors because there was so little room to maneuver. I know staterooms are small, you go into the cruise expecting this but this room was uncomfortably and inconveniently so!

Ship tip

Dont go!

LOL about the movie.   On the one rainy day they played "Gone With The Wind" on the big screen in the atrium.  We only watched a bit as we came in the middle and left for an activity after lunch, but when we got home I couldn't wait to download the movie and watch it in its entirety.

I also agree that they should be able to run at least 2 movies a day in the magnificent Stardust theater, a matinee and a late night movie.

You look for movies when there's nothing else to do! Don't attack me bc I am explaining what happened on our experience. This was 6th cruise, 3rd on Norweigan and the FIRST time I have ever had these complaints and the first time we've ever been bored! And my food complaints were not just about the buffet, most were about the dining hall food! The fact that we even had these complaints were a HUGE shock to us and other people we met had the same exact complaints! This is a free forum to express our experience so please don't attack my honesty!!!

I hope this isn't duplicated as I don't see the comments I just left....ANYWAY Dolphin 1275 don't base your opinion on a couple bad reviews...The Gem is a great ship...my next trip is my 3rd time on her....1st of all she is in drydock getting a full make right now ...so you will basically be on a brand new ship..as for the food...there are too many choices to complain about the same ole stuff at the buffet...if that is where you put yourself...yes of course that is going to get old...but the main dining room is good...and if you just want snacky foods like wings, tenders and fries, soup, salad ..you have O'Sheehan's ...are they top notch award winning wings..NO...but they are wings and they are suitable as such....lol...there are more than enough choices of free/included restaurants...and then you can do pay restaurants if you choose...sometimes I do and sometimes I don't...it;s all in what I may be in the mood for...I would recommend Teppanyaki(Japanese Habachi..for a fee) ...very worth it...yes they are changing things up a bit and adding ala carte items in some of the restaurants but they have many people to satisfy....say you want a pay rest and your partner doesn't ...it could be an option to get that kind of stuff in the MDR then...as for the size of the room...yes an inside room is small...but I have done them and still would if the drink package was offered when I booked....shower is bigger than what I have had on other lines....hot water is sufficient and pressure is good....as for TV ...I don't know who goes on a cruise to worry about what is shown on tv...by the time I get back to the room...I am exhausted and ready for bed...after checking out the daily schedule for the next day.....so movie selection I just don't get it....I can do that at home....and there is if you choose a big screen TV in the main Lobby called the Atrium...2 stories high...I have enjoyed the Superbowl there...so I know there is one....lol....how you could miss that is also beyond me...The entertainment is good...very comparable to other lines...it is free..go to as much as you can and if you don't like the theme...just get up ...pull out your daily schedule and see where else you can go....don't miss the shows like Dancing with the Gem Stars..Newlywed game..Battle of the Sexes (the one with the physical challenges ) ...The Quest...you will laugh your ass off.....yes that can all be different as they are based on passenger participation...but I have never been disappointed with them....the singing and dancing Vegas style show...hey I have enjoyed them and have looked over and my fiance was sleeping...lmao...but that is not his thing and he was there because I wanted to see it....it wasn't that it was bad...they have such a wide variety of people to try to entertain...some you will love and some well might not be your cup of tea....so you move on to something that is....very rarely did I not feel there was something to do ....as in between all this stuff there are acoustic shows in Bar City...a guitarist...a pianist and they have always been entertaining..and playing stuff that would appease a large diverse crowd....so bottom line is don't worry about someones bad experience...I am sure they didn't have a good time...but you also make your own good time...only you can really make or break your good time....even on my worst cruise which btw was on Royal...it didn't put a damper on my entire vacation....if the wait is long for a drink because of the drink package...get up and go to the bar yourself...we did....those people on that ship ..bend over backward and work their butts off....Room was clean and always turned up and turned down when it was supposed to ...attendant was very attentive....I for one can't wait to see all the updates on the ship when I go....Like they say....a bad day on a cruise or vacation is still better than a good day at work...DON'T WORRY...ENJOY....

don't worry dolphin1275 we just returned from an 11 day cruise on the gem on 10/30 Food was great! staff too. Must try Moderno specialty restaurant!! You try everything on the menu, (lamb chops, sirloin, seafood to name a few!) if you don't want a certain item you don't take it.. they come around with skewers..when you are done you flip your card from green to red and they know you are ready to move onto dessert. We didn't have time to watch movies in our cabin! plus lots of renovations being done now in dry dock. Have fun!

Wow losing 10 pounds n a cruise is quite unusual.  How unfortunate that you and your fiancé did not enjoy the food.  I hope that you are more satisfied on your next cruise.
