Norwegian Escape

9 Night Greek Isles & Italy (Rome Roundtrip)

Sail date: October 12, 2022

Ship: Norwegian Escape

Traveled as: Singles/Friends

Reviewed: 2 years ago

Review summary

Overall the cruise was excellent. Only major issue was working with Norwegian Air department and getting stuck at Rome airport with no assistance from Norwegian even though we had purchased our tickets through Norwegian and they booked our flights. After reading several reviews after finally getting back, may folks have had the same experience.

Embarkation

Be prepared for the crowds.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Main Dining was excellent with. Each of the free dining areas aboard the ship all had the same menu. Buffet was good with various selection, but many times the food was cold.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Only did putt putt golf and it was from. Too cold for the pool and hot tub for me, but saw a fair number of folks in both

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The Choir of Men was outstanding. Most of the singing was great with one exception. Did not like the Heartland Duo .

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
All the staff was were excellent, especially in the various dining options.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Overall, the ship was in excellent condition.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Room was great. However, our room, 10788, had a musty odor in it, but our service attendance could not smell it. We were traveling with friends and had a door inside cabin between rooms. We would of preferred that we could of opened door on outside to share the two patio , but Norwegian would not do it, even though other cruise lines we were one has done it.

Ship tip

Elevators are pretty full at times. On the Forward part of the ship, two sets of elevator buttons only worked for four elevators. Need to push both sets of buttons

Ports of call

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

Santorini, Greece

Was not impressed with this port at all. Went into OIA, but extremely crowded and was told that this was a light day. Would hate to see what it was like on a busy day.

Piraeus (Athens), Greece

4 out of 5
Greta place to tour. Only had time to visit the Acropolis and museum next to it. Be prepared for the long walk UP to the Acropolis. Only issue here was that we received a letter from Norwegian that COVID testes were not required, but we were required to take one once we got back on the ship per requirements of Piraeus which did not make sense. I would assume we would of been required to take on prior to getting off in Piraeus, not after we got back on ship.

Corfu, Greece

Valletta, Malta

Was looking forward to this port because of everything I have herd about it. We purchased the "City Knight and Mdina" tour through Norwegian. It was the worse tour that we had ever been on on any cruise. Thye did not hare hearing devices nor did the tour guide had a mic on. She was talking very low voice and when we asked for her to speak up, she said she could not. And when we could hear her, we really did hear anything related to the tour itslef. Other groups taking the same tour with other guides were unhappy as well.

Messina, Sicily

Naples, Italy

Livorno (Florence & Pisa), Italy

5 out of 5
It was great seeing the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but it is basically just a photo shoot. Really enjoyed going to Florence, especially seeing the cathedral. Wish we would of had time to visit inside. Might plan another trip for that

This is where the nightmare started. On Thursday, while in Florence, flight leaving ROME was canceled. We have purchased the Norwegian AIR package. But talking to Guest Services and Norwegian Air department, we got no assistance in booking a flight out of Rome. Finally, after hours of frustration, we decided to book and pay for our own flight. Unless you are on a tight budget, DO NOT take the Norwegian AIR package. It has been nothing but a headache before and after the cruise. (Week prior to the cruise, but flight had been cancelled and no one could tell be why.. Took several days for Norwegian Air to get it rebooked)

We were on the same cruise, and hey at least we still got our holiday, I feel more sorry for the people who couldn’t make it to Rome to embark on the day we got off! Everyone got a letter 2 days before we disembarked to tell us about the air traffic control strike and our various options. We were very fortunate that our flight was still on, just more and more delayed and finally left almost 9 hours late. Oh and agree with you on the guides for the Valletta excursion, we couldn’t hear much of what our guide was saying sometimes either although still loved Valletta and Mdina.

We were on the same cruise, the Italian air traffic controllers went on strike on the Friday we were meant to fly home, NCL advised us of this on Wednesday and they offered numerous options. You could take a credit from ncl and fly out of Rome the day before ( they paid for transportation from Livorno to Rome) or they would rebook you for a Saturday flight and pay for expenses for your extra night. And numerous flights made it out of Rome on the Friday, there was just delays. NCL had no control over a nationwide strike but everyone in our group was accommodated by NCL. not sure how you weren’t aware of this, it was all everyone was talking about the last 2 days of the cruise??????

Great itinerary. Sorry the air portion of your trip was such a fiasco. Glad you enjoyed the cruise portion.
