Enjoyed the ports but was disappointed in the staff.

Norwegian Epic

7 Night Western Mediterranean (Barcelona Roundtrip)

Sail date: November 03, 2019

Ship: Norwegian Epic

Traveled as: Singles/Friends

Review summary

Not sure why the staff was so poorly trained or if they were just tired at the end of the season. Some said the we're looking forward to the crossing to the Caribbean so maybe. This was my first time on Norwegian and I did not feel treated special and felt that for the $$$ it was not a good value. As a result of this trip, I won't be traveling on Norwegian any time soon.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
Should have spent the extra money for specialty dining. Comp restaurants had little variety and fair food.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Weather prevented using outdoor venues. Escape challenge was interesting.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Good entertainment.

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
Rarely saw cabin steward. Loved the friendly buffet sanitizer spraying staff but found most other staff rude, uninformed and big language barrier. Had no water one morning. Called housekeeping and no one ever answered the phone. Gave up after 20 minutes.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Ship was clean and seemed small and easy to manage for being so large.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Didn't mind the bathroom layout. Lots of storage. The beds do not separate very much so traveling with a friend makes things cozy. Other than the no water issue one day, it was fine.

Ship tip

When dining in the buffet for breakfast and lunch use the lower LaCucina area. Much nicer and less crowded. Coffee is also provided there so no need to carry it down the steps!, use

Ports of call

Barcelona, Spain

5 out of 5
We arrived two days early and enjoyed on our own. Side trip to Monnserat was really nice.

Naples, Italy

1 out of 5
Should have done an excursion. Area was sketchy on our own.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

5 out of 5
You need an excursion or other way to town. Long ride to Rome. Very nice but again a language barrier with the guide on Norwegian excursion.

Livorno (Florence & Pisa), Italy

5 out of 5
You need an excursion or other way to town. Very nice but again a language barrier with the guide on Norwegian excursion.

Cannes, France

5 out of 5
Lovely. Just tendered and enjoyed the town.

Palma De Mallorca, Balearic Islands

5 out of 5
Used the shuttle for a 15e fee as the walk to town was 45 minutes.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Self disembarked at 7:30 AM was easy.

I agree- I was very disappointed in the staff in the Epic. I stayed in the Haven and the concierge staff was not very helpful- couldn’t get us dinner reservations and told us we didn’t need tickets to shows- we’d go down to see show and the people at show desk were so rude to us and telling us we needed tickets. One night we went to get wings at Sheheens, they took our order but never came back. We stopped three different people about our food and nobody had any clue where it was. It took almost an hour for our food- we saw so many who came in after us getting their food way before us. I felt a lot of other staff besides our stateroom attendant who was amazing were not happy and I agree felt that they were just over it. I am always nice and understanding about situations and that things happen so its not like we were rude people asking for crazy things. It was my first time cruising on Norweigan and I don’t plan on cruising with them again.

Sounds like great ports! Have never cruised on Norwegian but in going through all the posts and comments I have reached the conclusion that either you love it or your unhappy with it. Seems there isn’t much of a middle feeling.
