It was our very first... by thecruisepics

Sail date: /
Ship: MSC Splendida

It was our very first MSC. Great literary: Napoli, Messina, Tunis, Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa. Great ship. Very good food 🍲. For us the early dinner was better. Not too many pool and Jacuzzi. The football court was not so good. I think we lost at least 3 balls during the weeks. There was no nets to protect it. Those days we traveled in the Balcony 3, which became Aurea few years later. 2014 July. Good old days. :)

Wow what an experience, I... by kniimy82

Ship: MSC Splendida

Wow what an experience, I really can't fault this cruise all, both Ship and Ports were amazing, The staff couldn't do enough for you and nothing was too much trouble. Ship it's self was absolutely beautiful!!, I think the one thing I loved the most was just being able to interact or do my own thing, it's a big enough ship to find a quiet space as well as some entertainment and activity 😀

Worst breakfast buffet ever by kleemd

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Splendida / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

The ports of visit were beatiful. The stateroom is spacious and clean. We enjoyed evening show everynight and it was great. The staff were very good as usual. My dissatisfaction were two areas. 1, Breakfast buffet. It was terrible. I am a good eater and usually don't complain about food. But this was the worst buffet I ever had! Scrambled egg must had too much water added (?to save money). I had to eat with a spoon not a fork. Bacon was tasteless and no flavor. It was like chewing a card board. Sausage was too salty and tasteless. No smoked salmon could be seen anywhere(most cruise ships serve smoked salmon on breakfast). Overall impression is that it tried to serve cheap meals to make more money. 2.Selling bottled water in dining room. It was really stupid and annoying policy that guest should buy water bottle in dining room. It may be European custom, but it's really annoying policy for American traveler.

Were we on the same cruise? by Dougfromnewport

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Splendida / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

We were on the Splendida - I think at the same time as another reviewer - but had a very difficult time. There was a notable lack of expected ammenities and the Yacht Club concierge was not "witchy" she was actively hostile and actually cruel. Her coworkers & subordinates were clearly embarassed by her behavior but unable or unwilling to address it.

Cruising Like a Rock Star on the Mediterranian by LeslieJane

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Splendida / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

If you are looking for a fabulous vacation traveling in splendor with every amenity - for a steal- try MSC and book through Cheap Cruises. My husband & I are boaters, but living in New England, like to take a winter cruise and usually go on Cunard Lines, although we have also traveled on Princess and others. This year, on the recommendation of a friend, we booked MSC Splendida for the Western Med. Being a bargain-hunter (aren't we all?) I went to Cheap Cruises. Now, you know cruising is great but MSC? OMG! The ship is beyond immaculate, has an incredibly beautiful decor (i.e. Swarovsky crystal stairs) (!), delicious food (i.e 7-course dinners with lobster and filet mignon), and amazing staff. Our "mini-suite" and balcony (from which we enjoyed sun, stars, and the Mediterranean) were huge. There are several pools, one of which is in a garden dome, which retracts when the weather is fine. The atmosphere is cosmopolitan with passengers from all over Europe and Australia. There are almost no overhead announcements to distract you or disrupt your play and all the staff speak perfect English. It is also totally relaxed, so no need for tux or gown although you might want to bring a sport coat or cocktail dress. Soak in one of the many hot-tubs or visit the spa for a steam and massage, mani and pedi or whatever your heart desires. We don't have kids, but noticed there are programs for both teens and little ones to keep them amused and their parents relaxed. We booked into the "Yacht Club" which is something like first class, and highly recommend it. It's an excellent value because all your liquor, beer, wine, soda, etc is included in the price. You also have open seating in a "Yacht Club" dining room and a pool and other amenities reserved for Yacht Club passengers. What about the ports of call? We left from Barcelona (if you haven't seen it, put it on your bucket list!), visited Tunis and went to the souks (amazing shopping for jewelry, spices and rugs), and old Carthage (remember, Hannibal and the Punic Wars?) From there we went to Sicily (sunny and beautiful), Genoa (old city with those amazing arcade-covered sidewalks lined with beautiful shops and restaurants), Rome (a bus-ride from Civitavecchia), likely the most beautiful place in the world, Marseilles (think, Provence and the Riviera) then back to Barcelona. The staff are superb! We did run into one witchy concierge, but her negativity was so far outweighed by other staff, including the other concierge, our butler who was an Angel, the ship's doctor ( no we didn't get sick, my husband cut himself) , the dining room staff and housekeepers, and our Tour guide in Tunis, Fati, an amazingly knowledgable man with great people-skills All in all, I can say this was definately a five-star cruise and we highly recommend MSC!!!

Travelled as a family of... by timcommons

Sail date: /
Ship: MSC Splendida

Travelled as a family of 4, we had a great week onboard the splendida. The staff were very good, food was lovely in the main restaurant and facilities on board were good, although it was a bit cold in December to use the main pools. We did use the jacuzzis, a lot. Check times that services and activities are open, especially the 4d cinema, we never got to see it, as it wasn't open when we went.

msc needs to make serious changes by GiovannaP

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: MSC Splendida / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

the ship was beautiful and clean. the wait staff and stewards were also very good. The food was average. Unlike other cruise lines water and coffee needed to be purchased and was not readily available. One could not have coffee with dessert or with lunch. Water was never provided, always had to be bought. Many of the passengers did not believe in waiting in line. Unfortunately, the ship's personnel did not encourage it either. When we commented on this, they looked at us as though we were the ones at fault. We could not plan ahead and book massages, etc. since we were not told until the night before when our excursions would be. When we informed them that we had not received our excursion tickets for the last two legs of the trip, we were told we would get them in Rome. It was 11pm of that night and we still had no tickets. They did not answer the phone so we went to the desk and were told, 'you will get them'. We explained that we wanted to go to sleep and needed to put in for a wake up call and had no idea what time our tour was. We had to do this the subsequent night as well. A cruise is supposed to be a very relaxing experience and that has always been our personal experience when we have cruised in the past (Disney, Princess, Carnival, NCL). IT was stressful to have to be concerned about things that should not have been a concern. After all, we booked our excurisions months ago online. Overall, we do not believe that under these present conditions we would ever consider cruising with them again. We spoke to several people who were also dissatisfied. Two couples ( a young Canadian couple and an older Dutch couple) were on their first cruise and because of their poor experience stated that they would not cruise again in the future. We convinced both couples that this was not your typical cruising experience and encouraged them to give it another try with another cruise line.

Great Ship and Very Satisified by GlennB2

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: MSC Splendida / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

I have been reading some other not so good reviews here and in my opinion my wife, son and I were all very happy with just about everything. We took this cruise in June 2010. The breakfast buffets were very nice, so much to chose from. Of course they had the same thing everyday, but you can choose something different everyday. All the food was hot. Lunch buffet was very good too. Our balcony room (12029) was very plush. Wife said sheets were the best she has felt, bed smelled clean. Bathroom was very nice and clean, room service was very good. Water did cost you extra, about $2.00 for a large bottle. We would buy water while at port and bring it back with us. They gave you 1 bottle of water included with every dinner. The entertainment at the theater was very very good and it got over at 10:30, not too late so we can get rest for the next day. All the ports were really great. I think some of these other reviews are too picky. We are planning to go again.

A very European cruise! by RebeccaL3

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple

We had a great trip but it could have been better! We were told it would be very European and it was! Food was wierd, service was not what we were used to, no drinks included with meals including no water, & not many food options. Wouldn't cruise MSC again.

My first cruise disappointment by CindyB16

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: MSC Splendida / Destination: Europe - Mediterranean

The ship is beautiful; they lack the service personnel to take care of how many people take the cruise. Other than the guest office staff, everyone who served me or serviced my cabin was excellent. Information on ports to be visited was very scarce. Definitely not a cruise I would recommend to English speaking people. I am still in shock that you have to pay for water period, you purchase bottled water. And other than at breakfast you cannot get a cup of coffee with your lunch or dinner in the dining room. You must purchase somewhere else. I was told sodas, juices and alcohol was a separate charge, pretty darn shocked to find out coffee and water was extra. For the cost of this cruise, to charge for everything other than meal time meals in the formal dining room or upper deck buffet, and remember this is not including what you drink you pay for everything or anything you drink, what a huge disappointment. There wasn't anything spectacular other than the ship's decor.

Do not go on this ship! by TimothyC2

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: MSC Splendida / Destination: Europe - Eastern Mediterranean

The ship looked nice, but the food ,the cabin and the fact that it was always late made me glad the cruise was over. We were late getting into port due to the fact the captain did not call in our time. We were 4 hours late getting to port the last day of our cruise and this caused over 200 people to miss their flights home.

MSC Splendida by PatrickW2

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Splendida / Destination: Europe - Eastern Mediterranean

Made all the right stops, 1-9-2010 to 1-20-2010 dates worked with my time off. Clearly MSC caters to itiallian families to fill the vacancy. Ship charged for items that are normally free on other lines. Kids ran free throughout ship, shows, dinner, 2 and 3am knocking on cabin doors. Food was terrible compared to other cruise lines. Shows were very similar to American Idol tryouts.

Worst Cruise Ever by CandyceC

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Splendida / Destination: Europe - Mediterranean

Overall the ship was brand new and it was gorgeous - however the beauty of the ship is surface deep. Here's what you can expect aboard the MSC Splendida: Food that is either not cooked, cooked until you can't cut it or it tastes awful. I ordered pancakes every morning due to the same menu every morning - cold ever day. One night a guests' lamb was bloody, another's was nothing but fat and one guest's chicken breast was like steel. Complaints will do nothing - staff will simply tell you it's you and not them - this was our response on several occasions. Our maitre d rolled his eyes at us and came back to stare us down at our table every night without saying a word - talk about awkward! Nothing is included! Expect to pay for bottled water, don't expect coffee at dinner (you have to go to the coffee bar for that and pay there), gelato is available but that's a pretty penny and alcohol - it's about $7 US dollars for a beer and even more for a cocktail. Room service is not included - except for cofee and continental breakfast - and don't order hot chocolate - that's extra too. If you do order room service, call at least an hour ahead of when you want it (even if it's just coffee). The staff don't have the best of manners - we had one tell us to get up and move so he could clean as we were in the buffet past tea time. There were also servers yelling at each other across the dining area when guests were still preasent. The ports of call were the best part of the trip: Egypt, Rhodes, Olympia, Athens and Rome.
