Review summary

The MSC for Me app wouldn't allow me to send and receive messages onboard from my 13-year-old daughter. I went to customer service and they told me it wasn't allowed due to privacy concerns?! Apparently, MSC feels it's safer for me not to be able to communicate with my child while on board. Thanks for that.

Embarkation

Huge, slow lines. Virtually everything could have been done on-line before arrival at the terminal thus avoiding the huge lines.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
The main dining room was mediocre. Specialty dining was good. The buffet was poor.

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
The operating times for activities was somewhat random and there was no way to tell when they would be closed. Some days the water park and slides were closed with no explanation. Near the beginning of the cruise, the jungle pool was drained for cleaning and was never completely refilled. The waterfalls in the jungle pool area were never turned on at all. All the pools were closed at 8:00 pm.

Entertainment

Didn't see any shows

Children's Programs

Didn't use any children's programs

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
Our main dining room waiter and the waiters at the specialty restaurants were very good. The rest of the staff we encountered varied between adequate and completely disinterested.

Ship Quality

2 out of 5
The layout of the ship was confusing and inefficient, especially for a new ship. There was no real central corridor to get around the ship easily and signage was poor. The MSC for Me app doesn't have ship maps?! Far too much of the ship is set aside for Yacht Club guests. Throughout the cruise, MSC made it obvious that non-Yacht Club guests were lesser guests. On the upside, the ship was very clean.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
The cabin was quite nice.

Ship tip

If it's not too late, choose a different cruise line.

Nassau, Bahamas

We did the Balmoral Island excursion which was nice but very little on the island was open.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

4 out of 5
We just walked around San Juan on our own.

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

We enjoyed the Ocean World dolphin encounter.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, Bahamas

We paid for beach umbrellas but many of the stands for them on the beach were broken. We had a lot of trouble getting ours to stay upright in the wind. The food seemed buffet food brought in from the ship. The ice cream shop was out of several flavors of ice cream and most of the toppings as well. At least it was expensive! There were electric carts to help get around the island...but only if you were a Yacht Club guest. They actually stopped the cart enroute and made my son get off when they learned he wasn't a Yacht Club guest!

Disembarkation

2 out of 5
Confusing and disorganized, just like the rest of the cruise.
