Ship: Jewel of the Seas

Cabin type: Oceanview

Cabin number: 7504

Review summary

We liked the ship and seeing the Panama Canal. Multiple sea days made for a very relaxing time.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
We were processed with some delay. San Diego has a small cruise terminal. An additional baggage screening line would have reduced wait time significantly.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
The food in Tides Main Dining Room was average at best. We thought the Windjammer was one of the best we've seen, both from the variety of food offered and the quality.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Rock climbing was fun and, due to the age of most cruisers, always available without any waiting. The miniature golf course was well designed and challenging.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
A good lineup.

Children's Programs

We didn't travel with children.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Our room steward was one of the best we've ever had. When we had a request or a problem with the cabin he took care of it immediately. Very friendly. Our assistant waiter was hands down the best we've ever had. He more than made up for a waiter who often became the invisible man after taking our order.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The crew could have done a better job keeping things ship shape. It seems like there was always stuff on the deck that needed to be picked up.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
A huge cabin looking out over the helipad. An excellent value for the dollar spent. However, be forewarned... a crew work room lies directly below and associated sounds will be heard at various times throughout the day. If you want really quiet, go elsewhere.

Ports of call

San Diego, California

The USS Midway Museum should be on everyone's list of things to do in San Diego.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

We took a boat ride and toured the city via bus.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala

We toured an outdoor animal sanctuary/zoo that the bus drove through. Very interesting.

Puntarenas, Costa Rica

We did a 25 segment zip line that we go through cruises.com. IT WAS AMAZING. We saw 11 water falls. the longest segment was approximately 2/10 mile.

Panama Canal Transit

We can cross this off our bucket list. the onboard lecturer was excellent.

Colon, Panama

We did the Panama Canal 'engineering' excursion. Basically, we sailed back through the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel Locks on a small boat. A pretty good lunch was included. However, it wasn't worth $172 per person. We saw from a slightly different angle the same thing we saw from Jewel the day before. The lecturer told us the same things we heard the day before on Jewel.

Cartagena, Colombia

Disembarkation

It took no more than 15 minutes from the time we left our cabin until we were standing curbside. We self carried our luggage.
