Review summary

Overall, this was a long sailing on a small(er) ship. Owing to the age of the vessel there are some idiosyncrasies, when we found them we thought they were charming, as opposed to an annoyance. Additionally, owing to the design and the seasoned staff, this sailing did not feel like it was at capacity. There was always room to move about the ship freely.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
We checked in and got on the ship. There were no incidents, the rooms were available on time and there was plenty of food open.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Sometimes windjammer had better food than the main dining room (not that the main dining room's food was bad). As usual, chops and chef's table were excellent.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
We enjoyed the pool in the Solarium during down time. The other activities we passed on since our itinerary was so packed.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Service and staff were impeccable throughout our time on Jewel. One of the guest services representatives was quite shocked by my questioning a charge on my folio, and when presented with the receipt for the service replying "oh, I thought it was more expensive. Thanks!"

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The ship was reportedly at capacity, but never felt like it. The waits for elevators, tenders, and disembarkation at ports of call was minimal. Finding a lounger at the pool was never an issue.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
The cabin was clean, but felt dated. Plenty of storage so all of our clothes and luggage were away and out of sight. The options for TV in the stateroom were non-existent since the only channels in English were the on-board info channels and music videos. 1522 is in the perfect location. Right next to the fore elevators which are usually quiet. It's also got great access to the spa and solarium areas.

Ship tip

When sailing out of port, go outside on deck 5, and walk all the way forward. The helipad is a nice place to watch sunrise/sunset/sail aways.

Ports of call

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

5 out of 5
Too much to do, to little time. Plan to spend a few days before or after the cruise in Rome.

Messina, Sicily

Rhodes, Greece

Santorini, Greece

Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Again, too much to do, such little time to do it in. Pay for one of the long walking excursions, they're worth every penny.

Naples, Italy

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Unlike any other Royal cruise we've been on, we took the elevator down, and walked right off of the ship to the transportation. There's something to be said about an EU cruise only visiting EU ports.
