Except for the poor condition of our cabin, we were very pleased and will consider other Royal Caribbean ships in the future.

We sailed the Jewel of the Seas about 8 years ago in the Caribbean and were surprised to see it was our ship for the Greece & Italy tour. While the public spaces in the ship may have seen some updating or refurbishing, the cabins have not seen anything. The couch, for example, was in poor condition & looked filthy. In the desk, one of the support pieces for the cabinet in which the refrigerator sits, just fell out; which we fixed. Like any other high occupancy structure, time & use requires the same updating & refurbishment to keep the customer experience positive. We won't go anywhere, again, on the Jewel of the Seas.

Ports of call

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy Did not visit port

We stayed in Rome for four days BEFORE the ship left, so we arranged our own tours.

Disembarkation

Since this is our 3rd cruise (second with Royal Caribbean), we expected the usual long wait and chaos in collecting our luggage. NO - Royal Caribbean has applied the same great logistical approach to the disembarkation process and it was a breeze! They've got it down to a science now and with very positive customer experience!

I believe Jewel of the Seas is being pulled for an update within the next few weeks. We took Jewel for this same itinerary in October 2016, our second cruise on Jewel, and really enjoyed the superior service, convenience, and classic beauty of this ship. Perhaps the refresh is needed, but we would not hesitate to go on Jewel for the many ways it and its crew excels. We had booked the transatlantic return of Jewel to San Juan this year, but that was interrupted by the maintenance event.
