Great scenery, abundant food, Princess Cruise quality just a bit off.

Review summary

Great time - Alaska is a beautiful place to visit. We added our own land excursion by renting a car touring at our own pace. We visited Anchorage, Denali and Fairbanks. There is NOTHING between these towns - Gas up beforehand.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Outstanding; Very easy - moved quickly on board

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Princess' new reservation system for dining still has some bugs in it. Many people didn't realize that you really needed to make reservations EVERY night for dinner before coming on board. On a positive note - food was abundant everywhere. On a negative note - minimal specialty nights and new limitations... only one lobster was free.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Fitness center was great; loved the sauna. Unfortunately the steam room was never working.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
They were good, but lacked enthusiasm. Not the usual upbeat nature. Comedian was so-so.

Children's Programs

No children

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Service was great given the number of tables each waiter was supposed to handle. Room steward was outstanding.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
I know this ship and where things are. Layout is fine.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Room was adequate for what we did there. Most of the time we were either at the buffet, dining room, onshore or on deck. I don't feel we missed anything by not having a window or balcony.

Ship tip

Don't expect to do laundry toward the end of the trip - the washers are shut down to avoid putting any waste water near the glaciers.

Ports of call

Vancouver (Canada Place), British Columbia

5 out of 5
Fun city - could have stayed longer.

Ketchikan, Alaska

5 out of 5
Loved the Lumberjack Show - highly recommend, especially on a sunny day.

Juneau, Alaska

5 out of 5
We visited the State Capital - my 50th!! Also, take the Tram - it's a bit expensive but worth the price.

Skagway, Alaska

5 out of 5
Cute town, not much to do. Took the Klondike Summit and gold panning. No, you don't really find any gold.

Cruise Glacier Bay

5 out of 5
Outstanding views - get your camera ready.

Cruise College Fjord, Alaska

5 out of 5
Outstanding view - get your camera ready. Should have gotten there earlier in the day; should have stayed longer. No excursion, but certainly different views as the shipped turned around.

Whittier (Anchorage), Alaska

5 out of 5
Just disembarked and picked up a car. Very easy to do. Allow time to get through the one-way tunnel to Anchorage - we had to wait about 1/2 hour.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Couldn't have been easier!

Glad you had such a good trip! I know Glacier Bay has tight regulations, but didn’t know about the laundry! Keep Glacier Bay beautiful!

There are several cities between Anchorage, Denali and Fairbanks. Eagle River, Palmer, Wasilla, Talkeetna, Chugach and more. When I lived in Alaska and we would drive to Fairbanks my dad always gassed up in Talkeetna. It's about 100 miles from Anchorage.
