We'd sail Explorer again and we'd sail the Adriatic again. It was a memorable vacation cruise experience.
Embarkation
5 out of 5
We took the local train to Ravenna from Venice. There was an RCI rep literally waiting in the tunnel with a sign and she gave us directions on where to meet the shuttle bus upon exiting the station. Very impressed.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
4 out of 5
Main dining room, Windjammer surprisingly good food and service. We ate at Giovanni's one night and it was lackluster service and overly rich food. Their menu is in desperate need of an overhaul.
Viking Crown Lounge
5 out of 5
We love the location with its great views and friendly waiters.
Onboard Activities
5 out of 5
No comment on any activity options because with a port intensive cruise we had no time to take advantage. Didn't bother us because we're D+ and have done all the ship things many times over. What we did see available on board, however, looked just fine to us.
Entertainment
4 out of 5
Overall pleased with the entertainment, especially the ice show. That's a Do Not Miss.
Children's Programs
No idea about the kid's programs because we didn't travel with any.
Service and Staff
4 out of 5
Good service all around though I will say that no one struck us as being spectacular.
Ship Quality
5 out of 5
Given that Explorer is an older ship we did not expect much ( we booked strictly for the itinerary) but lo and behold Explorer turned out to be a really nice ship. The artwork has withstood the test of time, unlike, for example, Serenade with her sadly outdated decor. The last refurbishment did an excellent job.
Cabin / Stateroom
1 out of 5
We snagged a coveted deck 7 corner aft. Better than a suite if you ask me! Our deck was enormous. We had a great cabin steward too, icing on the cake.
We walked into town ourselves. It's a bit of a walk but perfectly doable and pleasant. Corfu is simply lovely. We visited the fortress. Wear comfortable shoes as it's hilly getting up to the lighthouse.
We did the all day shore excursion to Capri and we were lucky enough to get an excellent guide who steered us through all the chaos that is Naples. The ferry is a bit rough getting over to the island so if you're prone to seasickness you ought to take some meds. Capri had spectacular scenery. We fell in love with it.
