Review summary

Since this was our first visit of any kind to Alaska, we can honestly say that we enjoyed the overall experience of the ports. The only shipboard experience with Holland America that we really enjoyed was the cruise around Glacier Bay. Food quality and choices was disappointing. Several times we were erroneously charged by the main Dinning Rm. The last night when we arrived back on board from Victoria our cabin ventilation system had been shut down...it took multiple calls to guest services and 3 hours to get the problem rectified. To HAL's credit, they did say they would refund $250, we'll see.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Quick and easy for Suite guests.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Typical average to poor food quality on the Eurodam.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
The appearance of a lack of activities was only due to not reading the daily planners. Some great sessions on the ports and current areas of Alaska. The Test Kitchen activities were very educational.

Staff were great for the most part. Service for problem inquiries could have been better.

Ship Quality

Older ship, but fairly clean.

This would have been a 5 star rating, but lowered it to 2 because we didn't agree with the practice of bear "sanctuary" hand feeding the wild eagles several times a day...no wonder why they have so many bald eagles hanging around in the trees. Noticed the same practice at one of the Marinas.

Victoria, British Columbia

Probably would get a higher rating if the cruise line provided free shuttles to town and was in port more than 4 hours. 6:30 pm to 11:00 on a Friday night with 4 other ships in port is not an enjoyable experience.

What did the Main Dining Room charge for? I have seen a menu that shows Princess has started adding items similar to the pay places and charging for them in the MDR, but the menu was clear that they were pay items.
