Celebrity Reflection

Review summary

This was our first time cruising with Celebrity and we were very impressed with the cleanliness of the ship and the friendliness of all the crew. We booked fairly last-minute through a travel agent who included flights, pre-cruise hotel, all transfers and a drinks package plus gratuities for no more than I expected to pay for the cruise alone.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Main restaurant was very good. As we were Concierge class, booking a table for two was never a problem. All food was beautifully prepared and served. As we sat in the same area every night, the wine waiter quickly got to know our preferences and the two waiters were very attentive, though never intrusive. The buffet had a very colourful range of sponge cakes (most of which I suspect tasted similar) and an extremely good curry station at lunchtimes.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The cruise director, Dan France, was a larger than life character. He seemed to be everywhere and did a memory show one evening in which he was able to show perfect recall (forwards and backwards) of lists he had been shown briefly.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Cabin steward was amazing, really friendly and he kept our space immaculately. The captain was present every evening at the theatre shows and he and other ship’s officers were much more friendly with the passengers than has been our experience on other lines.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Balcony Cabin was much larger and with a sofa rather than one uncomfortable armchair. The shower had a glass door rather than a clingy plastic curtain. The bed was very comfortable. Our cabin steward kept the room spotlessly clean.

Ports of call

Gibraltar (U.K.)

5 out of 5
One of only two ports where we took an organised excursion. The courier was entertaining and friendly. We were the only two passengers on the coach who weren’t American, which he found unusual and, consequently, took some time to chat to us about England where he had lived for a few years. The apes were as cheeky as everyone had warned us about! We were surprised by the size of the caves and interested to see the stalactite formations.

Barcelona, Spain

5 out of 5
Embarkation port. We spent two days here pre-cruise and did sightseeing then.

Livorno (Florence & Pisa), Italy

3 out of 5
A rather seedy port area. We didn’t take an excursion as we are planning a trip to Florence next year.

Villefranche-Sur-Mer, France

5 out of 5
Walked around on our own. A charming little French town, with some interesting underground streets.

Naples, Italy

5 out of 5
We took a ship’s excursion here as we wanted to see the ruins at Pompeii. It was extremely interesting and the courier was very knowledgeable about his subject.

Valencia, Spain

5 out of 5
Walked around on our own.

Alicante, Spain

5 out of 5
Did a trip on HOHO bus.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

5 out of 5
Walked around - we had been to Rome two years previously so didn’t feel the need for a rushed sightseeing tour.

Malaga, Spain

5 out of 5
Walked around on our own. Plenty to see.

Marseille (Provence), France
