We took the tour that took us on a boat through the Panama canal. It was a great experience. If you haven't been through the canal, do it. It is a lot better than just observing ships passing through. It's expensive but well worth the money.

Doing on your own is very affordable. We hired a guy to drive us to all the good spots. We paid $25 per person to go to Gaton Locks, the Forts at Portabello and to a very nice beach. He stayed with us the whole time and gave us a lot of information. The city, was kind of dirty, but everyone was very friendly.

It used to be better when they had shops and entertainment at the port terminal. Now it stinks. I don't think we'll be back. .

Our Panama Canal ferry boat and bus ride returned us to Colon before the ship arrived. We did not particularly like the shopping at the pier and the delay was a big negative. Don't want to go to Colon again....

WE bought the Panama Canal "engineering" experience. For $172 one gets to ride in a smaller boat through the Miraflores Locks and the Pedro and Miguel Lock. A very good lunch was included. However, it was little more than what we did the day before on Jewel, albeit with a much better view. The on-board narrator presented the same information as the narrator on Jewel did the day prior.
