After transiting the Canal the previous day, while docked in Colon, we took a tour back to the Miraflores Locks And Panama Canal Expansion Observation Center. We got to see, up front and personal, a ship go through both through the original Miraflores Lock on the Pacific side and then a Panamax ship go through the new Canal on the Gulf of Mexico side. A tour well worth taking.

We stopped here for 3 hours, mainly to pick up people who went on excursions after the canal, and were advised by the cruise ship not to go far. A group of 6 of us wanted to see the city, however, so we left the ship and stuck together. The city itself once you left the port looked like a war zone, and we made it 5 blocks from the port before we were stopped by the police who told us that we should go back to the cruise ship, as the city wasn’t safe. On our way back, a local older woman also told us that people selling “taxi rides” either take you to a shopping mall which is run down and 45 minutes away so you will definitely miss the ship leaving, or sometimes straight up kidnap people so definitely do not get into ANYONE’S car if you leave the port.

This port was a little rough I drove through Colon on my way to and from from my excursion. From what I observed from my bus ride I wouldn’t want to do a walk about in Colon. Did not look safe for tourist.

Our excursion included a viewing of the new locks, a transcontinental train ride, and a bus tour (including a worthless shopping stop). Good narration on bus and train, and a nice alternative to staying on board.

We enjoyed a ship sponsered excursion that showed us some wildlife, rainforest, indigenous people and the new canal in action.

The excursion we took was by My Friend Mario . We explored the old fort Lorenza, went to the canal locks, and journeyed into the rainforest for a 30 minute stroll. I highly recommend them.

We did the trip to the native village.. It was deemed to be authentic and that the families were living off the grid, However once walking through the area of the cabins, we saw coke cans and “croc” shoes in the mess under their cabanas.

The locks were INCREDIBLE to see and watch! The City itself --- not so much! Very very very poor city and really nothing to do there at all.
