Rented a car from Ace on the pier (reserved ahead of time) and drove to Merida. Parked there in a public lot ($1/hour) and walked around historic area with guidebook. Took a horse carriage ride ($20 total for 4 of us for 45 minutes). All was very interesting.

very nice quaint, unspoiled and undiscoverd mexican city -- free shuttle into town from the dock -- progresso is about 1 mile ride from the ship to the town -

This has only been a port for two years. The Mayan ruins are OK, but not spectacular. Good shelling on the beaches. Stick with the tours.

Get a driver and go into Merida and see the church built in 1549, which is still in use today. We had a guide that took us to the old and new markets. Merida is over 1million people but the architecture is excellent. Walmart and Sam's on one corner and 300 year old buildings on another.

We did the beach resort. It was pretty, food was not great, not sure it was worth the money
