We had originally purchased our shore excursions prior to leaving on the trip. However, on the first full day we received a notice that our excursion out of Progresso was cancelled. We had wanted to take the boat ride to Flamingo Reserve. No one told us prior to our purchase that it was no longer in operation due to lack of interest. We had to go to the shore excursion desk to pick another option. It was at this time that the woman told us that they hadn't had any one ask for this tour in a long time. I think they should have told us ahead of time or taken it off the tour options on line. At least they credited us and applied it to another one. We picked the Chichen Itza Ruins. It was a 2 1/2 hour ride to the ruins by bus and 2 1/2 hours back, which made for a long day. You get back to the ship about 30 minutes before it leaves port. It was a good photograph opportunity, but you are not allowed to climb the steps of the ruins.

We did not book an excursion. We took the free shuttle into the city so we could walk over & hang out on the beach. We were BOMBARDED with people trying to sell us anything - beer, massages, souvenirs, anything. Even when we were laying on the beach, people were constantly coming up to us. We did find a nice little beach side restaurant where we ate ceviche & drank cold beer inexpensively. On the shuttle back, a local jumped on the bus & played his guitar & passed his hat around for tips. The people here were desperate for anything you could offer.

We love Mexico. We cherish the people, the work ethic and culture. Unfortunately, Progresso is not the gateway we prefer. The shuttle bus provided basically feeds you to the wolves. This is a port where you want to book an excursion prior and go see or do whatever you wish. Our stop was a early exit off the ship, catch the shuttle, quick walk down to the beach strip. a few purchases along the way and by a long wait for the shuttle back to ship. We were back on board by 11:00.
