About Cherbourg, France

Cherbourg is located in Normandy, which is a province of France. Ever since the reign of Louis XIV, Cherbourg has been an important port town to all of Europe. The city is dominated by Mount Roule, which is the site of a fortress. From the terrace at Mount Roule, one can view a magnificent panorama of the area, which includes the Naval and arsenal, as well as the lush Emmanuel Liasis park, which houses an impressive display of subtropical vegetation.

If you are looking to buy an umbrella from Cherbourg (see movie), be prepared to spend $165 or more! If you debark on a Monday, the shops are mostly closed. Bigger stores open in the afternoon, something guest services should have told us, but they didn't.

We walked to the statue of Napoleon and passed the city hall. We saw a memorial plaque to the soldier/officer who liberated the city, weeks after D-Day. We walked around the special garden and then had a lovely lunch along the quai.

Lots to do right at the port. Submarine and Aquarium are both excellent, Titanic exhibit was interesting but did not take long. Easy walk into town, winding streets, very friendly.

Everything closes at 12 and reopens at 2 except the restaurants. The do not care about money they just care about sleeping their nap (siesta) we could get souvenirs cause everything was closed.
