Visited the Acropolis where we really wanted to go. Crowded as expected, but it's still worth the visit. The rest of the day we just explored the districts around that area on foot. It's a city with chaotic traffic. We took it leisurely, browsing shops, having gelatos and cappuccinos at outdoor cafes, etc. I think one visit to the Acropolis is enough.

We were in Athens for two days. The first day, we visited Athens by ourselves. We took the hop on Hop off bus just outside the port. Just a short distance to walk. There was also possible to take a city bus stop, X80, a bus that takes you from the port directly to the parliament. The ticket stays valid for 24hrs. It was interesting but we still decide to take the hop on hop off. We walked around the Acropolis and finished off our visit to the Plaka and the Monastiraki. The following day, we took a tour – the taste of Athens small group for a guided tour of all the monuments including the Acropolis.

People are friendly and that are lots of things to see. Be prepared for lots of walking. I thought it was a bit dirty and run down in some places.

I was prepared for Athens being crowded. We booked the Hop on Hop Off bus tour here. Took it to the Parthenon and Acropolis. I would advice purchasing your tickets in advance. The lines were very long and it was very hot and humid. We also ran out of Euro's and no one would take a credit card or American money at any of the tourist shops or even downtown. We got very thirsty. I also didn't realize we would be going on a 4 lane freeway. It was very windy on the upper level of the bus. Athens has a LOT of traffic and a lot of graffiti. I read this earlier so I was prepared. It's a big city! Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to get back to the ship.

We toured the Acropolis. Again very crowded, but also slick and uneven pavement. Wear good, sturdy shoes!

The acropolis was amazing and worth a visit. We paid for an excursion through the cruiseline, but traffic was terrible. Do not try to do the "TASTE of Athens" excursion where it tries to bring you to multiple places. We had other cruisers tell us they had to just drive by the places they were supposed to stop at because traffic was terrible. We did the "Acropolis and Leisure" excursion through NCL and it takes you to the acropolis and Plaka (shopping district) . Since it's such a busy bustling place, we felt paying extra for an excursion was the best choice.
