Skip the high priced excursion package. Catch the X-80 bus outside the cruise terminal--4 euros for a 24 hour ticket--for an express ride to the Acropolis. The same ticket takes you back to the cruise terminal; buses run every 30 minutes.

We did the hop on/hop off bus from Pireus into Athens. Then we toured the city on our own. Very easy and no huge pricetag from the ship's shore excursion. Stops were near everything we wanted to do and we had a great time!

In Piraeus, we skipping our usual train trip into Athens and opted for the “PR01 Corinth Canal”. After a couple of hours on the bus, we arrived in Corinth and went out on a bridge to see the canal from above. The bus went down to water level where our group hopped on a private boat to traverse the canal. They provided a surprising nice selection of local Greek food including spanakopita, shrimp, octopus and other snacks, washed down with a small glass of Ouzo.

Back home! My family's village is 3 hours from Athens and the last time I was at the Parthenon I was just a little girl climbing on the steps of the Parthenon that are now roped off. I cried hoping that my Yiayia and mama in heaven could see me back home. It was the most beautiful site to see. All cities have graffiti and their issues which you must look past and scrape it all away to see the beauty. and I cried again as Captain Demetrios pulled the ship away from the dock with hope of returning home again one day and I watched the Parthenon fade off into the distance and stare at the hills of where my Yiayia was from.

Love love love. Again paid for. Tour that no one showed us to pick us up. So we bought the HOHO Tour bought the Gray line (yellow bus) since the guy who was selling that ticket was helping us for the hour we waited for our guide to locate and call them. The gray line also has covered upper decks and ac inside. Good routes! Great audio guides! Loved this line since everyone was easy to find at each stop since they matched the bus color and the signs for the stops were well marked-also matched the bus. This bus also announces the stop number and name. None of the others I’ve done have. This is simple, but can be very useful when trying to keep track of where you are. This line also was not crowded, buses on time, no ticket issue and easy getting on and off. Loved it so much wish it was in Rome! Athens itself was much larger and had so much more to offer than just the historical big site everyone goes for. The tour really showed a lot of the city and all the various areas. Stopped near a fish market where we bought spices, they had a fruit, vegetable, but market outside as well. Down the alley they had a flea market for lack of a better term and it was very nice to look through old items. Found postcards from all over the world some had writing and postmarks on them for 1€ each which was a good find for me since I collect! These were also older post cards so that may have been the best part! We walked the streets, saw all of the sights and had a lot of fun. The heat is intense-take it from someone from Arizona. It’s INTENSE!!! Everyone we encountered was so nice and welcoming! Very cheap food, souvenirs, drinks shopping etc. Felt safe despite hearing negative reviews. A few people got pick pocketed on the trains but all I can say is to do your research when traveling. Be smart about how much money you carry out on each port, leave everything locked on the boat in safe. Never pull out large bundles of money when buying items, don’t leave wallet in your back pockets, beware of leaving valuables in zippers in backpacks...etc. All common sense type tips when traveling. Pickpockets are all over Europe, they work in groups nothing against any particular port. Research. Be smart and be prepared.

Took a bus to Poseidon's temple and then climbed the hill to the Acropolis in Athens. Part of the Temple of Poseidon excursion was a restaurant stop south of Athens. We are not new to Greek food by any definition so we knew it was good. However, the place they had us stop for lunch was incredible. The food just kept coming: and it was great. Beyond the usual Greek salad we were served least 5 meat courses, bread, fries, olives, feta as well as wine. The lunch by itself was worth the price of the excursion. Wait for it . . . we will go there again.

Highly recommend you book a tour in Athens as it is not walkable from the ship. We used Private Greece Tours and Aki was our driver/tour guide. Five stars for the private tour for our group of 6. Aki was at the port before we got off the ship waiting with a sign with our name. He had a van that could seat 8 passengers that was very clean, comfortable and he had ice cold water for us. Aki spoke English and Greek and was extremely knowledgable with Greece and Greek History. He was very friendly, personable and adjusted our tour to meet our needs. We went to several outdoor historical sites in the morning, a fantastic Greek lunch was arranged for us and finished the day with an indoor museum. P.G.T. TOUR GROUP www.privategreecetours.com
