Review summary

Best cruise so far. Loved the suite. Excursions were incredible. NCL Star dance group is excellent. Love the smaller ship. Greek food to die for. Visit Croatia before hordes of tourists completely over-run this beautiful country.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Cabin came with concierge and butler. 5-minute check in. Concierge got us on and off the ship in no time flat.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Buffet was as usual. No highs, no lows. Wished that more "local" cuisine would have been served. Specialty dining was great (also "as usual").

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Ate too much so I actually used the fitness center to justify my eating habits. Gym was surprisingly well equipped given the fact the Star is an older ship. Music at the pool made hanging out a nice experience. Game shows were the same as on other ships.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Loved the shows. The Star dance group is awesome. Saw Burn the floor and Priscilla.

Children's Programs

No kids.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Very attentive personnel. Had access to, but did not use very much, a Butler and a Concierge. Both, as well as the room steward, provided excellent service when needed.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Room, common areas, restaurants, etc were exceptionally clean. The Star is an older and smaller ship and was easy to maneuver.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Had an aft penthouse suite. Was like a small one-bedroom apartment with lots of room to spread out. Loved the espresso maker. Complimentary snacks every afternoon. Large balcony held two chairs, two lounge chairs and two small tables. Had to pry my wife off the balcony every time we needed to get a bite to eat or go to a show.

Ship tip

Comapre prices and splurge on a suite if affordable.

Ports of call

Venice, Italy

5 out of 5
Second time from Venice. As awesome as the first time. Will be sad when the city will disallow cruise ships to sail passed the city. Actually did not get lost this time walking the city street labyrinth. Transportation to and from the port is easy. Used a cab from the airport but a water taxi to the airport. Public transportation water taxi was 15 Euros/person one way.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

5 out of 5
What a gem. Was familiar with Dubrovnik. No need to do an expensive excursion, just an NCL transport to and from the city (do not try yo walk the distance). Plenty to do for a day. We will go back before it becomes over-run by tourists. Late summer (late August) is better than May through July.

Kotor, Montenegro

5 out of 5
Sailing into the Bay of Kotor is a wonderful experience in and of itself. Went to Perast by bus and took a boat to Our Lady of the Rocks. Spent some time in the town of Kotor. Next time we go we will climb the city wall. Just google Kotor and take a look.

Katakolon (Olympia), Greece

3 out of 5
Port to Olympia. That's it. Nothing else to it. Had been to Olympia before which was a good excursion. Spend some time eating and did a bit of shopping in Katakolon.

Piraeus (Athens), Greece

5 out of 5
Took a bus to Poseidon's temple and then climbed the hill to the Acropolis in Athens. Part of the Temple of Poseidon excursion was a restaurant stop south of Athens. We are not new to Greek food by any definition so we knew it was good. However, the place they had us stop for lunch was incredible. The food just kept coming: and it was great. Beyond the usual Greek salad we were served least 5 meat courses, bread, fries, olives, feta as well as wine. The lunch by itself was worth the price of the excursion. Wait for it . . . we will go there again.

Split, Croatia

5 out of 5
Beyond its many Adriatic islands, Croatia offers a plethora of natural wonders. Had there been time to cover the distance, we would have loved to have visited Plitvice Lakes National Park. However, time being short, we did the next best thing and went on the Krka waterfall excursion -- which was well worth our time.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Because we had a concierge-supported cabin, our disembarkation time was less then 5 minutes.
