Because you land at the port, you do lose time to actually get to Rome, but otherwise, it's Rome and beautiful. Otherwise, you do have options of nearby towns that are equally beautiful if you want to stay closer or have been to Rome before.

The port is really far from the heart of Rome and FCO airport. We spent 150-175euro each way for private shuttles from Rome to port, and 60euro each way for private shuttles from Rome hotels to FCO airport. We were travelling with a small child, elderly grandma and a lot of luggage so there was little choice. It would've been more cost effective to start our cruise in Barcelona or Genoa and take excursions into Rome. We stayed for about 6 days in Rome and saw most of the noted places. There's a lot to see and take in so we did not regret the added cost, but would probably not go back again to start a cruise now that we've seen it. Going through Italian Customs was a joke. When entering, the person at the head of the line directed me to a station and the agent directs me to another while he stands up and leaves because his shift is over. When leaving, 4 agents standing in the cubicle chatting and did not even look at us or stop talking while stamping our passports.

Too far from Rome airport relative to making an easy connection to ship. Ideally, Arrive at your embarkation location (Rome in this case) a day before sail date, and allow a minimum of 3 hours AT THE AIRPORT to minimize your anxiety! We booked a private car service (at a premium) to ensure time between airport and ship is minimized. We used Airport Transportation which was excellent!

Great excusion into Rome. Four hours on our own then the "Taste of Italy" tour. Try to take this tour during the early spring or late fall. The temperature was nearly 100 degrees in mid June.

Spent four days in Rome prior to the cruise. Fantastic time and great food. There are a lot of lines to visit the Vatican so be prepared. If you are going to the Vatican Museum get a skip the line tour.

Most people take the rail trip to ROME, which is relatively easy and less than an hour. But be sure to "validate" your ticket before you ride! If you don't and they check, they will fine you on the spot. That said, Civitavecchia itself is a very pleasant town.

We arrived early and spent three days in Rome before sailing; not through Royal Caribbean. Very hot/humid in late August.

There's not much to do in Civitavecchia itself - but if you want to make the 90 min drive into Rome, that's an option.
