Cuba itself was nice the process to go through cuban immigration was long and tedious and in the future people with excursions no matter if it's with carnival or through other companys should be allowed off the ship first. instead there were people missing excursions on the positive side though the carnival staff made sure someone who knew all the companys made phone calls to them on your behalf to inform them that the person would be late. I complained to guest services and the woman personally took me down to where i could get off the ship in time for my excursion. I give top marks to the professionalism the crew displayed.

Cuba is years away from being able to host a serious tourist industry. We took a tour of Havana and enjoyed the people and beautifully maintained 50s cars but there was no real shopping or other activities. It was mostly a sad look at what must have an amazing place to visit and party at before the revolution but most everything is still run down and not much construction in sight. Walking around the few areas that had been cleaned up for tourism was okay but we were frequently approached by beggars, street artists following us around aggressively trying to sell us characterture sketch’s or paying to use the rare public rest rooms. The tour guide was obviously being given a cut of the action from the tourist shopping areas that we were dropped off at. Credit cards were not accepted anywhere and the tourist currency (CUBs) required an upcharge for US dollars (but not other currencies) - like they were doing us a big favor to allow us to spend money in their country?). And then we were required to attend a “cultural person to person” activity in order to tour the island - a socialist propaganda program that was a 30 minutes utter waste of time and another chance for locals to collect more tips. We were glad that our port call to Cien Fuegos was cancelled due to windy conditions in the harbor inlet.

The reason we chose Norwegian (our first time on NCL) was because they had a longer in port time in Havana than any of the other cruise ships we researched. After we set sail, we were advised that because of pre-planned (pre-planned!?!) maintenance we would arrive later and leave 3 hours earlier than scheduled. All full day excursions and all 2nd day afternoon excursions had to be cancelled. Other excursions had to be re-arranged or cancelled. We did the Ultimate Highlights of Havana on the first afternoon. After a couple hours when asked to use the bathroom, we were told the bathroom on the bus was broken. They did nothing to allow people on the bus any options. There was one bathroom available on the entire almost 4 hour excursion. This was at the Fort where we had 30 minutes to shop and see the Fort. The only bathroom was a fifteen (15! Seriously) minute walk each way around and through the entire huge Fort. Some of the people stopped and peed behind large stones/walls while their companions stood watch. A couple of seniors had embarrassing accidents. This was after warning us over and over to drink lots of water and stay hydrated! Totally unacceptable and unnecessary. The guide nor the bus driver seemed to be concerned or understanding at all. That was the only shopping opportunity available to us on that excursion and too many of us had no time to either see the fort or shop. We lost our 2nd excursion the next day because we left Havana 3 hours earlier than scheduled and couldn't move it any earlier. We were very disappointed.

The icing on the cake and had a fantastic time. Took the ship arranged sight seeing tour on the first day which was alright and gave us our bearings. Attended the Tropicana Show in the evening and it was very entertaining and reasonable value. The ship arranged Vintage Car Tour the next day was also brilliant, we were extremely lucky to have an excellent guide and driver.

Per the carnival website you HAVE to book an excursion here through them. Is this a hard set rule? Do we need an excursion at all and can we choose to get one while there?

In addition of a two day tour with Fertours, during the nigth we went to the show Parisien at the Hotel Nacional. The show and ambience was excellent. Rember to buy the tickets as soon as you arrive to Habana, the price is 35 CUC per person (includes one Mojito). Several cubans told me that this show is much better than Tropicana.

We absolutely loved Cuba. We chose the classic car excursion which allowed us to see the city without doing too much walking.

do not schedule a tour, when you disembark, walk through the terminal, go to San Francisco square and rent an old car with driver for the day to take you around.

I wish we had been able to enjoy the night life too, but after being out in the sun all day on two tours, we were too tired to go out again, through immigration, etc.

It was an honor and a privilege to visit Cuba. The tour of the Cigar factory was eye-opening and just being able to set foot in the country was incredible.
