There is no toilet paper on the island so make sure you carry something with you when you leave the ship. We did a sort of Cuban cultural tour on Wednesday. The bus covered a lot of ground so we had great glimpses of the incredible architecture and art areas. The island was discovered by Columbus, run by the mafia and after the revolution in 1959 the Communists regime so you can see the building constructed during the time that the Russians were there.

Havana was beautiful, interesting and sad all at the same time. American Airlines sold us an excursion that started at 11 am, but the ship didn't even dock until after 11. We were able to take the tour in the convertible Chevy through Urban Adventure, who I highly recommend. We went on Sunday to do the walking tour, only to find out it was actually scheduled for Saturday, so we lost our money. Maybe that was my fault, but American Airlines should know the ships arrival time, and that you have to take excursions both days, so why sell two of them the same day.

This was the whole point of choosing this cruise. Cuba was fun, charming and lots to do. You do NOT need to purchase a ship excursion to enter Cuba. Lots of choices once you're in port.

Cuba was great. Do not book an excursion with the cruise line. You will save a few hundred dollars booking something off the boat.

Just what we expected, a time warp. We wanted to see it before it became too touristy. We went out on our own and felt completely safe. Actually left something on a bench, realized it about 45 min. later and lo and behold it was still there!!! Where else would that have happened? People were very friendly. Most of the people we encountered spoke enough English that we didn't have any trouble.

Havana was a great port to visit. Be sure to bring euros or Canadian money to exchange off the ship as it's a better exchange rate than US dollars. People here are extremely poor and very grateful if you bring them coloring books and crayons for kids, shampoo, deodorant, soap and toothpaste. We did this and the Cubans were extremely gracious as these items as expensive and hard to get. Many things to see by walking and just getting lost exploring the streets. People will want to take you on tours in their private taxis and they are trustworthy and safe. However, they will take you where THEY want to go as they get a cut of the restaurants and cigar shops that they take you to.
