The Norwegian Sky cruise to Havana is worth it due to the overnight stay which is longer than any other ship stays in port. While it may not be the most exciting or large ship, the all-inclusive drink package is a nice feature which can essentially be a couple hundred dollars added value per person.
Embarkation
4 out of 5
Arrived in Miami at 12:00 and embarkation was pretty smooth. I've been on check-in lines that take up to an hour. Lines moved fast. After checkin, we were escorted to a sitting area and called in by group number which took 20-30 minutes until we boarded the ship - not too bad.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
4 out of 5
The food on the ship was pretty good, but they've definitely scaled back on choices although there was still plenty to choose from. Nothing fancy or out of the ordinary. Food in dining room was good enough with some of the best food being on sit down lunch menu. Didnt do the buffet for breakfast, but the lunch and dinner buffet had a small, but good and fresh salad bar, sandwiches, carving stations and other dishes of various cultures. Le Bistro is worth checking out for an upcharge. Excellent steaks, lamb, soups, side dishes and top notch service. Alcoholic beverages were included on this cruise and it was a nice feature. No lines for drinks (other than the usual) and you could order anything you wanted.
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
Being a smaller ship with no sea days, there werent a ton of exciting activities. We played both bingo games, but nothing else seemed enticing like some of the wine pairings, game shows, scavenger hunts, etc that other cruises have.
Entertainment
4 out of 5
The comedian Mike Jones was the best entertainment and totally worth seeing. He performed three times including one adult show.
Service and Staff
3 out of 5
I've been on about 10 cruises and the staff and service on this ship were just ok. Nothing bad, but I usually take a liking to several crew members but nobody seemed to really stand out in this staff or make the effort to impress anyone. Some of the male entertainment crew for bingo, etc were nice but extremely goofy and used the same tired jokes at every event.
Ship Quality
3 out of 5
The ship was clean but the ship was confusing to get around for being a small ship. You can only get to certain locations from certain parta of the ship, certain elevators, etc. Very confusing.
Cabin / Stateroom
2 out of 5
The rooms are extremely small. We paid for a balcony for three adults and the pull out sofa was child-sized, yet they charged us for an adult in the room. Luckily our group had space in another cabin for me to sleep, but otherwise that short bed would not have worked and they claimed there were no other cabins available.
Ship tip
Check out Le Bistro French restaurant. It's worth the upcharge. Also check out comedian Mike Jones if he's still aboard the ship.
Havana was a great port to visit. Be sure to bring euros or Canadian money to exchange off the ship as it's a better exchange rate than US dollars. People here are extremely poor and very grateful if you bring them coloring books and crayons for kids, shampoo, deodorant, soap and toothpaste. We did this and the Cubans were extremely gracious as these items as expensive and hard to get. Many things to see by walking and just getting lost exploring the streets. People will want to take you on tours in their private taxis and they are trustworthy and safe. However, they will take you where THEY want to go as they get a cut of the restaurants and cigar shops that they take you to.
