Whale watching here was great! We took a small boat (16 guests) and found a pod of 5 Humpbacks to follow. Captain had sonar that allowed us to hear the whales as well. Definitely should do an excursion here as not much else to do in port.

When you get off the ship there’s a few tourist trap shop and a gondola ride. We did the whale watching and bear trap excursion in October. The whale watching was amazing, we saw about 10 whales it was a great experience. It was out of season for the bears so we did nothing but look at grass. We got our money back for the bear portion.

We enjoyed seeing some neat scenery at this port. Even from the ship, you can easily see nature trails and wildlife. From our mini suite balcony, we admired a bald eagle perched atop one of the trees. It was a beautiful sight!

We didn’t book any celebrity Shore Excursions, choosing instead to do our own thing and this worked well for us. Icy Strait Point was first. This is a quiet stop and we really enjoyed ourselves there. We walked into the town and stopped for a drink at The Office Bar and while there, we availed of their wifi. The locals were very friendly and pleasant.

Icy Strait is the name the local tribe selected for the cruise port. The town itself is called Hoonah and is home to 750 people. This is definitely a place to do an outdoor excursion. They offer zipline, jeep tours, native education tours, whale watching, fishing and more. We did a self booked whale tour with Glacier Wind Charters and it was amazing. We saw three different groups of whales, and 1 even breached for us! While the whales weren't super active, it was lovely to be on the boat with only 6 people and learn about Hoonah and the local life from our Captain, Casey. The walk between to the ship and town can be long but there is a shuttle that is offered both ways. The port had a nice restaurant with gorgeous water views if you just want to hang near the ship.

Nice port, nothing much too it. We did the whale watching and the Zip line. Both were fun.

The talk with the men carving the totem pole was worth the stop, which by itself was a pleasure.
