Carnival Spirit

July 2018 - 8 Night Pacific Islands Cruise on Carnival Spirit

Just got off the Carnival Spirit this morning and had an awesome time. The ship had just been refurbished, so although parts were a bit dated, she was sparkling clean and the new sections, shopping areas, Soul Play, were modern and fresh. The staff on the Spirit are wonderful - so friendly. From room attendants, to bar staff and dining staff, all willing to smile, say hello, and assist with anything. The main dining room was great, staff were always busy, but friendly and engaging and we never had to wait too long for anything. Menu choice was good, lots of choice each night, with regular staples as well as daily specials. The buffet itself was OK, however it was good to have choice during the day between burgers, Mexican, deli style, pizza BBQ, traditional buffet. YOU WILL NOT GO HUNGRY! 😜 My kids also loved the hot chocolate and soft serve ice cream - free 24/7! We went to the specialty restaurant Nouveau on the first night - $45 per head plus a free bottle of wine (1st night special) and the food was really great. Highly recommend this experience- high quality fine dining for a very small price. The entertainment was fabulous some nights and OK on others. The Miss Houdini show is not to be missed, as well as the awesome 80’s night festivities. Great house band - with a wide repertoire from 50’s through to now. My 9 year old son absolutely LOVED kids club - Camp Ocean - he was there for hours each day - and begged to go after breakfast, after lunch and after dinner. One of the great things about kids club is that the venues for the older children vary throughout the ship, so they are not stuck in one room all the time. Ports were great, easy getting off and on the ship - if you don’t book shore excursions, there’s always plenty to do yourself. There was always something going on - Carnival really is the fun ship. Looking forward to experiencing the Splendour when she takes over from the Spirit in 2020.

Explorer of the Seas

March 2018 - 11 Night South Pacific & Fiji (Sydney Roundtrip) Cruise on Explorer of the Seas

Explorer of the Seas - South Pacific

We had a great time on the Explorer of the Seas. The weather was not good for a lot of the trip and as a result two Fiji ports were cancelled. We managed to get an extra port stop at Port Vila instead so was a good option. There was plenty to do onboard even when the weather wasn’t nice outside. Staff were fabulous! I would go again in a heartbeat. Don’t take too seriously the small amount of people who provide negative reviews - this cruise is great and if you go with a positive attitude you will have a great time!

Cruise tips

Mystery Island, Vanuatu

My favourite port - beautiful, tropical island with clear seas, great snorkeling, and it is so small you can walk around the whole island. Make sure you are around when the plane lands and takes off from the airstrip in the middle of the island - you can literally stand right beside the runway!

Noumea, New Caledonia

Noumea is what you make of it. We used HOHO bus and went to Lemon Bay. Kids loved swimming here and there are 2 pontoons to swim out to.

Lifou Isle, New Caledonia

Really enjoyed Lifou. We went snorkelling at Jinek Bay - $15 per person, it fills up quickly, so if you don’t get there early I suggest waiting till about 12.30/1pm. Also went to the freshwater cave which is a fabulous walk down a rainforest like ravine into a cave which contains a 7m deep pool of fresh water which is fun to jump into.

Port Vila, Efate, Vanuatu

We organised our own private tour and visited a local school, Blue Lagoon, Turtle Bay and Vanuatu Chocolate Factory. Was a fabulous tour and highly recommend all especially Blue Lagoon and Turtle Bay!

Voyager of the Seas

Voyager of the Seas

Walk to front of the ship by helipad - it is awesome.

Lifou Isle, New Caledonia

Small island. Easy tender process to and from. We did our own thing - walked to Jinek Bay - paid about AUD15 to snorkel. Then walked to the cave with the freshwater pool. Also about AUD15 to get in - eventful, challenging but fun walk at a steep angle down through a ‘forest’ to get there. Great to jump into the pool in the dark cave at the bottom.

Noumea, New Caledonia

Did the hop on hop off bus. We paid for this from the ship, however bus was packed and not reliable. If you have the option to pay independently once off the ship, do so. We went to Anse Vata beach and caught a water taxi to Duck Island where we went snorkeling.

Explorer of the Seas

Explorer of the Seas

Get to know where things are. There’s always a place to go from Deck 3 - Deck 14.
