Review summary

We had a great time on the Explorer of the Seas. The weather was not good for a lot of the trip and as a result two Fiji ports were cancelled. We managed to get an extra port stop at Port Vila instead so was a good option. There was plenty to do onboard even when the weather wasn’t nice outside. Staff were fabulous! I would go again in a heartbeat. Don’t take too seriously the small amount of people who provide negative reviews - this cruise is great and if you go with a positive attitude you will have a great time!

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Very quick and easy, into the ship in about 10 minutes

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
MDR food was good, Windjammer had plenty of choice. Went to Giovanni’s first night - was OK - I’m glad we paid ‘first night done right’ price, rather than full price.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Hubby and kids loved the flow rider and rock climbing. We played mini-golf when the weather allowed.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Ships two main singers - Rechelle and Craig were great. Calypso band was good. The orchestra was excellent. The shows that were ‘one night only’ were not so great - quite amateurish. Ice skating show was excellent.

Children's Programs

4 out of 5
My 9 year old loved kids club, however seemed to do the same activities each day. Probably would be beneficial to provide more variety.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Service in stateroom by room attendant was excellent, MDR and Windjammer staff were excellent, most bar staff were friendly and efficient. Guest services were excellent.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Ship is old but very well maintained. Crew were constantly cleaning and fixing things.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Good size, lots of storage.

Ship tip

Get to know where things are. There’s always a place to go from Deck 3 - Deck 14.

Ports of call

Home town - love Sydney!

Lifou Isle, New Caledonia

4 out of 5
Small island. Easy tender process to and from. We did our own thing - walked to Jinek Bay - paid about AUD15 to snorkel. Then walked to the cave with the freshwater pool. Also about AUD15 to get in - eventful, challenging but fun walk at a steep angle down through a ‘forest’ to get there. Great to jump into the pool in the dark cave at the bottom.

Noumea, New Caledonia

4 out of 5
Did the hop on hop off bus. We paid for this from the ship, however bus was packed and not reliable. If you have the option to pay independently once off the ship, do so. We went to Anse Vata beach and caught a water taxi to Duck Island where we went snorkeling.

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
We should have taken the ‘self disembarkation’ option as we only had one suitcase each and had to wait almost 45 minutes from our allocated time to leave.
