The weather nightmare

Can't image the horror show...folks getting off ships in ports with reasonable weather, but cant get a flight home..and worse, IMHO, cant get to the port to board. Planes have to come from somewhere..Some folks fly to the port the day of..or even the day b4 and stay over. Even driving can be a poor to impossible option. If ever there was an excuse for travel insurance...there it is. and you guys know Im not a fan...but wintertime??? sheesh...

Great stuff...very sneaky..I'd cruise out of Galveston more when they add some newer ships...want to rent us a room? heheheh

Living in Los Angeles never weather issues if I use my local port. I just have a car service pick us up an hour before boarding time. If I cruise out of a US port other then So Cal ports I go a day early unless it is a port where I visit family for a few days before the cruise. When I cruise out of Europe I like a week in Italy before the cruise, if I'm paying for travel to Europe may as well stay a week or two pre or post cruise.

The only issue I have had was last year in Seattle we were in holding patter because of snow and de-ice the out going flights before we could land. That was on a land vacation, not a cruise.

When we do the Alaska cruise out of Seattle, we make a week of it. Coming home, we volunteer for "bumps" as we are in no hurry.( taking a bump sometimes pays for our flight) The rest of the cruises we leave 3 hours prior to boarding as we live 34 miles from Galveston, we take our time driving.

Right on

It makes you have a grin on your face that can't be erased, doesn't it? Did you have a good cruise?

Always buy travel insurance. We have had to use it a couple of times.

You definitely want less stress when you embark. even if there are no flight delays (hey, it happens!) you wonder if there will be. By flying in a couple days ahead we can choose a later flight and get a good night sleep.

Due to the distance we always travel to our embarkation port 3 to 4 days prior to our cruise. Causes less stress and anxiety. Getting there is the highlight. Coming back not a concern- we get home when we get home- always but travel insurance.

AuntPinkie, when I sailed Symphony of the Seas last weekend, my town got the most snow of the season so far lol! I was happily scrolling through people's Facebook pictures from the warm, sunny deck.

Non-stop flights are the best, but we rarely get them flying out of Green Bay. :)

We like to cruise in the Winter and always fly out the day before sailing. That said, we also watch the weather leading up to the flight, we have been know to change our flight to another day early if a major storm is headed our way and/or go to a hotel near the airport (an hour and a half from the house) so as to not miss the flight. We also do our best to get non-stop going to the embarkation port. It is one of the perils of living in Colorado. It is also one of the pleasures to be sailing in the Caribbean while a winter storm rages back home.Wink
