CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Coast Guard officials said Wednesday afternoon suspending the search for a woman who went overboard from the Carnival Ecstacy cruise ship early Wednesday morning is currently "not on the table."

The Coast Guard initially reported the incident, which happened approximately 27 miles southwest of Freeport, Bahamas, as a woman "who reportedly fell overboard." A Carnival spokesperson said witnesses reported she jumped about 15 miles off the coast of Grand Bahama Island.

The woman fell approximately 100 feet into the water from the ship, Coast Guard officials say.

Watchstanders with the 7th Coast Guard District command center received notification from the Carnival Ecstasy crew that a 32-year-old woman was reportedly seen falling overboard at approximately 2:30 a.m. Wednesday from the 11th deck, the release states.

A Coast Guard Air Station Miami MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew, an Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew and the Coast Guard Cutter Gannet crew are assisting in the search.

The Coast Guard Cutter Bernard C. Webber crew was also diverted to assist in the search.

The Carnival Ecstasy's last port of call was in Nassau, Bahamas on Tuesday.

There are 2,300 passengers on board, according to Carnival.

Delayed about one hour, the ship will arrive in Charleston at 8 a.m. Thursday, officials say.

The woman's identity and hometown have not been released.

spending $3000 just to kill yourself.......but you get the benefit of knowing 4000 other people will be thinking about you for the next several days. Mainly for disrupting their cruise, and possibly missing an island due to your selfishness.

So sad.

I had to talk my cousin down about getting a balcony. She was under the impression it had three sides exposed, like on some apartment buildings. Praying for comfort for the victim's family and friends.

Although my heart goes out to her and her family, it is virtually impossible to fall off the ship unless performing an act of foolishness, like sitting on the rail, etc.

One takeaway from this tragedy should be a warning (especially for new cruisers) - do not climb or sit on the rail. And for those with suicidal thoughts, seek help ...

And for those who are afraid to cruise because they think they will fall overboard it bears repeating that it is almost impossible to walk up to the rail and keel over ... it is high enough to stand up against and enjoy the scenery without falling unless you are dumb enough to climb it.

I was cruising on the Holland America Veendam Mexico cruise we were heading back to San Diego . A lady fell or jumped from the ship , they found her in about a hour, she did not make it....Very Sad

Sad for family and friends. Worse if they were on the cruise with her.

I really feel bad for the surviving family when things like this happen. They are caught off guard, surprised, hurt, and sometimes they feel guilty. Unfortunately we will probably never know the truth or the background to this. Was it preventable? 100%. Was the cruise ship in any way responsible? 0%. Sometimes people make bad choices. Sad to say but this is how people get nominated for the Darwin Awards.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to simply fall off a ship. Unless you put yourself in a position to fall off by sitting or standing on a railing. It may have been an accident, but it is a totally avoidable one.

So sad for the family and friends of the woman.
