I was born to cruise....Just wish my bank account was as convinced!
Cruise Lines: Carnival Cruise Lines
Ships: Carnival Freedom
Ports: George Town, Grand Cayman
Overall I would say that this was a fun little cruise. It was a 4 day cruise that went to Key West and Cozumel. We have been to both ports before so we knew what to expect and where to go.
Purchasing faster to the fun, to me, was a great idea. We got on the ship right after Diamond & Platinum and were able to go right to our room and stow our carry ons, meet our Steward and then head for lunch. Very smooth and greatly enjoyed that.
Disembarkation was completely different. Faster to the fun was ushered into the Universe Theatre and when called, we were not allowed to use the elevators to go down one level, so regardless of age, unless you were special needs, you had to carry your heavy suitcase down a flight of stairs with many many other passengers. This was a severe safety issue because if one passenger had of dropped their luggage, people would have been hurt. They need to revamp this procedure!
Although an aging vessel, we found it to be clean and well maintained, however, there were the obvious signs of use onboard, but I am not the type to judge a book primarily on its cover. The cruise director, a very attractive young lady, tried to keep the passengers entertained and engaged, although most seemed content to be pool side or in the Casino. The pool deck was a bit crammed at times and I found the lack of room in the pool to be in short supply and a little frustrating in the hot tubs as children felt it necessary to swim from side to side. The dining area was nice and clean, and never did you see a dirty table for too long and we always managed to find a spot to sit, generally where we wanted it. The Casino, as usual on any ship smelled of stale cigarette smoke, but that is to be expected I guess. The comedy club was good as usual, but on this ship was smaller than what we had seen on other ships. Very intimate setting. The other clubs were well decorated and clean. The Universe Theatre was a beautiful theatre but the only bad thing I have to say about it is if you are seated upstairs it always seems like you are looking through the hand railing. (annoying).
Our steward was amazing. Puthut was in and out of our room and we hardly saw him except for in the hall. If we needed something, it was there. The MDR service, was a different experience. On the left side of the Celebration Dining Room we had quick service and were pleased but on the left side, it took them 1 hour just to get us an appetizer. The Bar service was a little slow at times but that is to be expected with a lot of thirsty people. The Customer service was excellent but we had purchased the faster to the fun so it was expedited anyways.
For the most part, the food was hot and decent. The variety in the MDR needs to change more frequently as it is the same stuff regardless of whatever Carnival ship you are on, or so it seems. Nothing to write home about. The buffet was ok, they had a different nationality each day which kept it interesting. Guys Burgers, good as usual but you get tired of Burger and Fries after awhile.
Key West is one of my favorite spots as you can get off, feel safe to walk around, etc. We always enjoy key west and just walk around, go for breakfast and a drink and tour the town.
Cozumel, we went to Passion island by power catamaran. We have done this excursion before and it never disappoints. Although the water was murky due to the hurricane, it was like bath water and we stayed in the water for 2.5 hours. Sadly you need more time at this location!
All in All we thought it was a great trip and the Fantasy was a fun little ship but we definitely do appreciate the larger ones more!
I am not one for negative reviews and I know that all you folks will take this with a grain of salt, as you should, but I feel that this information is warranted.
We sailed on the Conquest in Sept 2014, so it was like coming home to a comfortable shoe this time around, however, that is not the case this time around.
The service on the ship, for the most part, save 3 individuals, has changed drastically to the point of making you feel unwelcome and a nuisance to the service staff. The evening shows were the same shows, though good, as the ones that we saw on the freedom in 2013 and the conquest in 2014.
The menu has been trimmed significantly so the dining room selection was limited, not to mention the temperature of the food, aside from the soup was far from hot.
The buffet we found to be good and with enough variety but noticed changes there too with certain things no longer available, etc.
Our room steward, we met once and often times did not have our room clean in a timely fashion, and at 1 point had to ask for towels.
The pool, was generally chilly but that did not stopped me, but the ladies that we travelled with avoided it for the most part.
The service in the shops were far from helpful and we often felt like we were bothersome to them.
There was a constant smell of sewage at the front of the ship everyday. I had read that before in previous reviews and thought that they were just being silly, but it was very pronounced!
Regardless of all this negativity, I did not let this ruin my vacation and I still had fun, but felt compelled to share with you folks.
Sadly, I will not return to Carnival after this one.
This being our 2nd cruise, my wife and I knew a little more what to expect and were excited to come back to Carnival.
The food on this ship was amazing, Guy's burger joint, all I can say is OMG! The Steak house was top notch. If there was ever a meal I had to have before I die, I had it there. The buffett was always stocked well, proper temp, etc. The only negative thing I have to say is that the Chocolate buffett was a disappointment.
The entertainment was great but I found on this ship that is was a little more lacking that the previous cruise that I had been on. They need to work on getting better lounge singers because they sounded like cats left outside in the rain!
The comedy club was the best we have ever seen. I think we all had tears in our eyes from laughing so hard!
the POC were all awesome, which were Cozumel, Costa Maya, Belize and Isla Roatan. Cozumel was our favorite due to Paradise Island! What a beautiful spot. Would go there repeatedly!
Embarkation and Disembarkation was awesome in Miami. I highly recommend anyone taking a cruise out of Miami as the port there is so much better than Port Everglades!
This being our first cruise, we had no idea what to expect, thus making this the best cruise ever! The only downside was the long lines waiting to get onto the ship in Fort Lauderdale.
The food was great, hot and plenty of it. The adult beverages were plentiful, though costly after while but hey, we are on vacay.
The MDR service was impecable and always prompt, food hot and if it wasn't right, they made it right and immediately.
The entertainment, was great, we enjoyed the tribute to the beetles, the comedy shows left us in stitches and I often found we laughed the hardest and the loudest.
The ports were great, Key West, Grand Cayman (Our favorite) and Ocho Rios.
All and all was the best time of our lives!
One negative thing and that was only from my experience was I am severley clostrophobic so being in a crowded line during lifeboat drills was un-nerving for me.
