THE FOOD IS ALWAYS EXCELLENT ON HOLLAND AMERICA. THE DESTINATIONS WERE NICE BUT THE SHIP WAS VERY COLD EXCEPT IN OUR STATEROOM WHERE WE COULD WARM IT UP.   ALL IN ALL WE HAD A GREAT CRUISE.

Convenient but boring overpriced trip by ronaldjay999

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Westerdam / Destination: Mexico

The ship is going into drydock for refurbishing in April.  Badly needs it.

Entertainment by Ensemble company is very amateur.  Individual entertainers were top notch.  Food in the main dining room;  chaotic, inedible mostly for dinner; and poorly served.  Dining in the specialty dining room;  Pinnacle was excellent and easily compared to fine dining on land.  Cost $35/pp.  We ate in this dining room 5/7 nights.  Bought a bottle of Ruffino Pinot Grigio (cost on land $8)  on ship with gratuity $51.  Bring your own wine and pay the $18/bottle corkage.  Can save a bundle.  We were in Suite and had a Concierge Lounge which was excellent.

We live in San Diegol and the Cruise was a no brainer.

Signature suite by tomorrow

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Westerdam / Destination: Mexico

I had a signature suite for handicap  - I don't think that suite was any bigger than a regular handicap room that I have had on a Celebrity ship - the ship needs to be refurbished - buffet - a big disappointment - dining room food - felt sorry for anyone who had a big appetite - very small portions - if you have sailed with Celebrity then this is not the same at all -service staff very friendly - room steward the same - have nothing  bad to say about the people who worked on board - always a smile - always helpful - but the Ship itself is not my cup of tea - I will stick with Celebrity from now on.

Ship: Westerdam / Destination: Mexico

The service was fantastic. The food was marvelous. The actives were lacking as a young couple on the boat we found that there wasn't a whole lot to do. The food was amazing and so was the service. We just found ourselves a little board at times

Great cruise on the Westerdam by bhdickson

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Westerdam / Destination: Mexico

My husband and I took this cruise with our son and his wife.  We are in our 60s and our son is in his early thirties and his wife late twenties.    We all had a very good time, but our son and his wife  would have liked it better with more people around their age.  Holland America does seem to attract older people. That said, they did enjoy themselves.

The ship is really beautiful and very well maintained.  Check-in went very quickly and easily, which has always been our experience with Holland America.  Debarkation was also smooth.  We were in the last group since our flight wasn't until 2:30 so we were in no hurry, which made it pretty low stress.  We appreciated being able to wait in our cabins rather than try to find space in public areas for ourselves and our carry-ons.

We had excellent service, though the late cleaning and turn down by our room steward was much later than we're used to.  This may have been through no fault of his and was not a big deal.  Service in the dining room was excellent.

The food was some of the best we've had on a cruise both in the dining room and in the buffet.

We enjoyed the ports.  We did those on our own.  After we tendered in at Cabo San Lucas we got a water taxi that took us around the peninsula and then back to where there is very good snorkeling - no coral but a lot of fish.  We agreed on a time and he came back to pick us up and take us back.  In Mazatlan we took a taxi to the Golden Zone for some shopping, had lunch back on the ship and then walked several blocks to the water taxi to Stone Island.  We rented chairs and the others went swimming.  At Puerto Vallarta we took a shared van to the start of the Malecon and explored and shopped.

Activities: My husband and son would have liked more active activities.  They did play soccer with some other men one afternoon and played HORSE on the basketball court.  I attended a series of classes on Windows 10 that happened every day.  I really enjoyed those.  There were also America's Test Kitchen cooking demonstrations as well as several by the onboard chefs.  Of course there was trivia, which we didn't do.  We brought several card games and played those in the evenings so we only went to one show with a magician and that was very good.

Classy ship, great crew and above average food. by CWD

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Westerdam / Destination: Mexico

This was the best food we've ever found on a cruise ship. We paid to eat in the Pinnacle Steak House but cancelled the second night after seeing how good the food was in the main restaurant. First time on Holland America, and we will definitely use them again.

The Westerdam is a beautiful ship. by hihosilver

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Westerdam / Destination: Mexico

The ship is very elegant. The crew was fabulous. Very attentive. The food in the dining room was not as good as I had expected, although there were some very good offerings. The food in the Lido Market was very good. Lots to choose from. The Dive In grill has great burgers, dogs, and fries. We used the laundry service, and we were very happy with it. The Pinnacle Grill was excellent. Well worth the extra money. We heard that Canaletto was very good as well, but we didn't have time to go there. The pools were very nice, but crowded. Needed to get there early if you wanted to get a lounge chair. Nice bars, good drinks. Trivia in the Crow's Nest was fun. Great shows. Loved it!

23 out of 29 by scmaki

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Westerdam / Destination: Mexico

Overall, the ships staff was great, courteous, and attentive. Bathrooms were always clean, and overall ship appearance was well maintained.

What was lacking or made this review only 3-stars was an over whelming battle of sickness, either from ship food or otherwise, and no we didn't drink the water ashore. Of our group, totaling 20-people, at least 23-people experienced some sort of viral symptoms, and gastro intestinal sickness. Please keep in mind, that at least 70% of our group are world travelers with abundant experience navigating the world. In addition, 2- people in our group are medical professionals and felt confident that the sickness was most likely obtained from either food or water aboard ship.

Disappointed by jschweitzer66

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Westerdam / Destination: Mexico

I loved the crew, and the ship. The porch were all very beautiful, I enjoyed Porta via Arta and my salon the most. I found your staff to be accommodating but a Best Buy bit disorganized on the departures and exiting the ship.

I've found that the state room was old and antiquated to tell the television did not have very many channels and the couch I was on a post it on because the table and chair blocked access. In addition, I informed Temple crew members that I suffer from a very logical disease and attempted to be accommodated up offer exiting the ship come at different times and for dining. Unfortunately your crew failed to meet or offer any combination and I was forced to eat and wait throughout the cruise.failed to meet my accommodation .

additionally I found dining to be chaotic and on organized in the main dining room. It would take on average two hours to eat a meal once seated which is a lot of time, and based on my accommodation I was in the unable to still see many of your entertainment shows.

I have sailed on over 20 ships and almost every cruise line and I expected a lot more from Holland America. However, the food was mediocre at best in the state room was unsatisfactory. Finally, I wish I would've been able to have an accommodation for eating and exiting the ship

Great Trip - Great Ship by davidlgreencpa

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Westerdam / Destination: Mexico

The cruise was very well run and very well organized.  The food was amazing!  The ship was always clean and the crew were so very nice and helpful.  Improvements would include more designated areas without children - it was tough to find a place without kids, other than the casino or a lounge playing classical music.  We'd also like more drink package options like a daily package.  The weekly ones don't fit well when there are multiple shore days.

Great time with family! by mwarder

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Westerdam / Destination: Mexico

Enjoyed the time with family!  The staterooms were clean & comfortable!  Overall the food was average and the ability to have access to drinking water was somewhat frustrating.  You either had to purchase water bottles, ask a server or go get a glass of water in the dining area.  The ship was older,  the shows were repetitive, the pools were small and access to games was limited!  We were with a huge group so we had a fun time but if I were booking my own cruise I would definitely book a nicer ship with more to do and an all inclusive package!

ARK. visitors by possum721

Ship: Westerdam / Destination: Mexico

We enjoyed cruising on the Westerdam.

We had excellent room stewards; tended to our needs all week.

We had excellent Dining Room Head Waiter; Assistant Waiter, ALSO.

Would have like a larger room, but did get an upgrade.

Staff was very sufficient.

Had good Food Variety; nice dining areas at Lido deck.

No complaints from us.

first trip to Mexico by dcooker21

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Westerdam / Destination: Mexico

The room size and bathroom area was larger than Princess cruise.  That was a nice surprise.

Food was good and I was happy to see servers, even in the buffet.  I don't like to see people getting their own food and eating off of the buffet.

We did have a problem.  We didn't have air conditioning  for three days.

They gave us a fan, but we had to have the door open to get cool air into the room.  They compensated us with $100.  But that was very minimal.

Relaxing and Peaceful by hbenje

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Westerdam / Destination: Mexico

This trip was as stated above, however, the weather was very humid this time of year in Mexico making excursions difficult to enjoy.  Ship is beginning to show wear but staff was very friendly and the food was excellent.  The dining experience was the highlight as well as decent food in the Lido Restaurant.  The only drawback food-wise was the Mexican buffet one evening.  It was horrible!  Entertainment was decent however it was strange that the singers and dancers were only there two nights out of seven.

Disembarktation process was a mess.....could be improved upon.
