A very memorable cruise experience that we shared with our 15 year old grandson.
Embarkation
5 out of 5
One of our fastest cruise ship embarkations ever.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
5 out of 5
The main dining room was excellent, especially the salmon at dinner.
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
The gym was good but it got hot inside in the afternoons.
Entertainment
5 out of 5
Service and Staff
4 out of 5
Cabin steward and the bartenders were excellent. The dinner service in the main dining room was a bit slow sometimes. Service in the steakhouse was exceptional.
Ship Quality
3 out of 5
I give the ship high marks for cleanliness. But the Volendam is a bit smaller than I like, so the number of entertainment venues is less than we like.
Cabin / Stateroom
3 out of 5
Cabin was clean. We got upgraded to a full oceanview. Location of the cabin was very good and quiet. But I wish the cabin was about 20% larger. Storage was plentiful.
Ship tip
There is a great observation area at the very back of the ship on Deck 6. Its out of the wind and offers full 180 degree views.
We rode bikes in Stanley Park and took an afternoon trip to Granville Island on a passenger ferry. Granville Island was a lot of fun. Stanley Park is very scenic and it has a good brewpub.
The town is very clean and easily walkable from the cruise port. There are a number of shops for souvenirs, art work and jewelry. There are also several restaurants and two good brewpubs. The biggest attraction is the passenger train,
We did a salmon fishing excursion and we were successful. Purchased the excursion through Holland America, so the charter captain cleaned our salmon and they were taken back to our ship. The chef prepared them for our dinner the next two nights. Quite delicious.
Thanks for the review on Volendam. We are going on her to Alaska in September and Hawaii in November. Did they have Lincohn Center Stage? Apparently they are doing away with that which sucks.
