Viking Sea

10 Night West Indies Explorer (San Juan Roundtrip)

Sail date: January 11, 2020

Ship: Viking Sea

Cabin number: 8017

Traveled as: Couple

Review summary

This was our first cruise and it kind of lived up to expectations. Would not return to the Caribbean. Would consider sailing with Viking again, but maybe when I'm in my 70s.

Embarkation

4 out of 5

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Not much to do on this ship.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Entertainment was aimed at an older (70yrs+) audience, which was a bit depressing.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
99% of staff were examplary, but one waiter and the male Guest Services person spoiled an otherwise faultless crew.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Ship is modern and clean. It couldn't be described as luxurious.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Cabin was large, clean, quiet and very comfortable. The bed was amazing.

Ship tip

This cruise was 90 percent older guests (70yrs+). This isn't a problem in itself, but the entertainment was aimed squarely at that demographic and we (both 50yrs old) felt bored.

Ports of call

San Juan, Puerto Rico

3 out of 5
San Juan was nothing special. A bit dirty and uninspiring. Not beautiful.

Tortola, British Virgin Islands Did not visit port

We didn't dock here as the captain said the sea was too rough. Despite this, two other ships docked in front of our eyes...

St. John's, Antigua

3 out of 5

Castries, St. Lucia

1 out of 5
Small and vaguely interesting. A bit run down. Not glamorous.

Bridgetown, Barbados

2 out of 5
The cruise ship docks are in a commercial working port so Viking laid on shuttle buses to the terminal. The town itself is run down, dirty and vaguely threatening. Would not recommend.

Roseau, Dominica

4 out of 5
Pretty little port. Just what you imagine a Caribbean port to be like.

Basseterre, St. Kitts Did not visit port

Again, the captain claimed the sea was too rough to dock. Many passengers were questioning this.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

3 out of 5
Clean, developed port. Very commercialised.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
They turfed everyone out of their cabins at 8am. We asked for a later disembarkation as we had a later flight. They eventually agreed... we got a whole 30 mins more!

I have been to several of those ports twice and will be going again to a few of them in 2021, I love them. Those are most of the best.

I have cruised with many younger and older passengers and totally enjoyed seeing each age group enjoy themselves, now that I am in my 70's I would like to think that others would enjoy seeing me enjoy myself as well. MY husband and I enjoyed the company of a gentleman in his 90's over 20 years ago on an Alaska cruise,we decided that he was a great inspiration for us to continue into our later years,so the people older than you are should be inspirational to you!the years fly by quickly!

After my cruise in Nov. on celebrity, i believe the same ports, next time my family and i will just go to their gorgeous beaches instead of sight seeing.....

Not sure how much you have traveled, but you visited some of the best ports in the Caribbean. I’m not sure what were expecting. It’s always funny how many people who have no clue question the Captain’s judgement on the ability to dock safely.

Thanks for your review

I note other passengers also know better than the captain - I’d be interested in their qualifications to captain the vessel!!

It’s common practise for everyone to have to vacate their rooms by a set time, regardless of flight times. Otherwise they can’t turn the ship around in time. You may have been one of say 100 with a later flight. However, all ship facilities are at your disposal. I disagree re the entertainment. I travelled on Viking Sea in my late 40’s but knew beforehand that it was about the destinations, not the entertainment. Go RCI for Vegas entertainment. It wasn’t all to my taste by any stretch, but I enjoyed much of it, so your comment is subjective and perhaps a little ageist. As for luxury, it is Scandinavian Chic rather than ostentatious luxury, something that they advertise. Luxury is again subjective as I wouldn’t want the bling that some other smaller lines offer.
